Hey!

My name is Erika, I will be a junior in high school this coming fall. I've been playing music since I was in 4th grade and it quickly turned from a hobby, to something I want to do for the rest of my life and hopefully make some sort of career out of. I played clarinet in 4th grade for a year, and then switched to the alto saxophone in 5th grade, which I consider my main instrument today. I've also had experience with soprano and tenor sax, as well as flute and believe it or not... I play the snare drum in a pipe and drum band with my former elementary school music teacher. How's that for a range of instrumental interests?!

I have my heart set on a career in music and will hopefully attend a music college after high school. I still have not settled on what I want to do. For a while it was music education, then performance and of course, I went between those two for a while and although I'm still keeping my options open, music composition is starting to peak my interest. No matter what happens, though, I think all of the above will be a part of my life in some way or another.

I hope to not only learn from you all, but share my own two cents with you guys (although I've only taken basic music theory in high school and am just starting to try and make more sense of composition). I'm sure I'll absorb lots of information here, though!

Thanks! See you on the forum!

Hi there!

I'm not that crazy about writing or being a forum member. Still, runned into this forum & after browsing through it for some half n hour, decided to register.

Hope to post some of my work here soon... in meenwhile - thanks for having me here.

Cheers :)

Hello, I am an elementary teacher, I am 25 years old composed before college but actually learned composition in college, I have a Bachlors in Music ed a minor in Composition

Welcome Erika - if you have the passion and drive, a career in music is quite easy. Just don't count on making boatloads of money...

Zeljko, you don't sound like you're going to come back, but welcome anyways

Beethoven (if that is your real name), welcome! Hope teaching youngsters is going well for you!

Hello, im new. I just got finale and thought it might be a good idea to get some critique. I need to upload some of my work, Im having some initial trouble. I am 14 and have been trained in voice and piano. My vocal career began areoung 5 years and I've been playing piano since I was about two. Please listen to my music once I post it and give me your harshest criticism.

Hi,

I'm not so young (35) but I am a composer. I've been playing music since I was 12 (guitar, piano, clarinet)and composing is something that I was too unsure to try but I seem to be getting the hang of it now.

Now I just try to let my imagination wander and get my ideas out.

I've written around 30 songs, a Rag, Two movements for a symphony and a few short instrumental pieces.

I love music and look forward to talking to everyone here. About music or anything else really.

Nice to be here.

Welcome, everybody and enjoy your stay! :w00t:

Nice to have more not-so-young-composers in the forum.

Yay, Robin, we're taking over the place! :)

Robin, we're taking over the place!

They'll have to change the name of this place to:

twentysomethingcomposers.com

:D

Wow, so many talented people!!

I'm Kris and officially 17. And unlike some of you people I'm actually a girl.... So yeah. I play piano. like the whole lot of you, and I have taken singing classes until I realized that you only need to practice to be good. I compose, but I am so lazy that I just record myself instead of writing everything by hand on sheet music.... Yeah. That's how lazy I am... I guess you could call the recorded stuff brainstorming... like, for later uses in other pieces....

I've so far, written on sheet music 2 pieces for piano and 1 for voice and piano which fun because I got to write lyrics~

Yeah and although I have studied classical music for nine years, I play in prog rock bands and jpop(japanese pop) bands just for the fun of it. It's cool meeting new people! So yup, PM ME!! =) because I might not be a very active poster....

Speaking of jpop, I love japanese music... I hope to be able to one day break into the asian music industry!! I love playing live shows and have done so many of them... I want to join an orchestra but gosh, on their website they ask participants to pay money in order to be a part of them. So I gave up on that idea.

I'm thinking about learning jazz next year. I'd love to play in bars and restaurants! I hope to be able to do something with music, hopefully get a career out of it! I work hard, I play piano every day(yesh, I AM that nerdy!) and I'll be having two teachers next year! One for piano and another for theroy, ear training and solfege.

I'm also going to be buying a mixer soon! So I'll be able to record my singing and piano! (my mic is a karaoke mic though.... ahaha!!)

Oh yeah, and I guess you could have deducted that I like to talk a lot... =)

Hah, my screenname. I'm quite proud of it as it unites two of my biggest obsessions under one dorky, yet clever screenname that I now use for EVERYTHING online. In Sindarin Elvish (Tolkien, Lord of the Rings)

So it's not too rare to have an Elvish word as your nickname. Meaning "dirty" in Sindarin as well, mine is a reference to my old nick. :)

Oh hi, I'm Pauli from Kouvola, Finland, a composer, songwriter, and pianist. Here's a brief history of my composing career during my so-far-17-year-long life:

An interpretation of some sort would state that I have been composing since I was three years old - started before than Mozart! My first composition, which was recently discovered by my father, dates back to 1992, and was created with a notation software named Mozart. Misterioso.

But many factors hint that I was so young that back then I didn't even understand what I was doing. For example, there are two instances of a 38-bar-long segment comprising only one single tone. Still, my father calls it a composition, and I agree, since he's a professional musician. As are many other musical people in my family:

My father plays the clarinet in a professional symphony orchestra. Before the orchestra today, he played the bassoon in another orchestra. My mother is a violin pedagogue. My older big brother has played the guitar for 13 years. My younger big brother has played the drums for 11 years. Shouldn't be very surprising that I'm actively involved with music, too.

Yup. Even though I started younger than Mozart, I haven't been as creative and talented as him. My first "actual" work emerged when I was eight. Since then, I have been doing some pop-rock music with a tracker software named Impulse Tracker, and even after nine ears, I still use it with minimum assistance of external software.

(Tracker music is music where sounds (or samples) are put on a timeline in multiple channels (tracks) in some order and pitches so that they (should) resemble music when played. A bit like MIDI, but not exactly.)

Some of my pieces of popular music have been rated quite unique and original by many hard-core musicians suchs as my parents (obviously ;)) and some other musicians with more musical understanding than I have. If you want to, you also can listen to my newest pieces here. Just recently, they have been influenced by classical video game music.

Not only has my influence changed lately, but so has my style in general, too. Last autumn I was hired by my dad's orchestra to be a doorman; I check people's tickets, and I get to attend the concerts for free. So, I've become interested in artistic classical music, starting to compose such myself, too.

Right now, I'm mainly working on a piano concerto, which I intend to give to a friend of mine so that he could perform it in a young solists' concert. Since the orchestra regularly works in two towns that both have a music academy, the orchestra annually has a young solists' concert, where the finest students of these academies make their debut.

Was this brief enough? Or too not-brief? Geez. :/

I'm thinking about learning jazz next year.

Welcome Kris....don't do it. Jazz is bad.

Welcome Gwaur! When I saw your ID, it reminded me of that strange avant-punk-noize-metal band Gwar (pictured below), terrifying.

:) it's called: an insatiable listening appetite. You'll find jazz musicians often have very diverse musical tastes.

Hi there,

This is Robin Hodson. I work for Sibelius/M-Audio Pro Tools and I'm a composer. I mostly help folk learn and use our software. I'm based in Baltimore MD, a short distance from Peabody.

Whoa. I am intensely jealous, and I also want to ask you about 77 questions about Sibelius. But I'll wait.

Gwaur: Cool stuff on your site. I don't speak Finnish, though, so I have no idea what 'Oli ihmiskunta, Oli kuolemaa' means.

Hi.

I'm David and I'm 17. I started fooling around with music when I was 13, but I decided to get serious maybe last year and took an independent theory course, and hope to have more before I hit college. I like my rules, although I overlook them all too much. :) I love the classical music pre-1900 (although I do really like Shostakovich), and I never liked any contemporary classical. Y'know, the atonal (and seemingly atonal) stuff.

My main instrument is the flute, although I have played the trumpet the longest and like to play the oboe, clarinet, saxophone, recorder, and I just recently started playing the French Horn. I wish I could play the piano, which could really help me out composing-wise and for college, but...

I'll admit I think I recently lost a little bit of my passion for writing music, and hopefully this site is just the thing that will get me going again. :)

I think that's it.

Do you do Annapolis also? If so we have talked a few times.

Hey! i am a recent highschool graduate who has been composing since the beginning of my life. I have played the french horn for seven years and loved every second of it so naturally, all my compositions have sweet horn lines. But then again, all the great composers use great horns:

John Williams (pretty much 99% of his music)

Patrick Doyle

James Newton Howard

James Horner

Howard Shore

Just to name a few. so yeah, thats me. Oh and i am going to be a film score composer, so be on the look out and help me with my compositions so i can achieve my ultimate career.

Yay, another Robin! There can be only one... :stoicjedi:

David, here you can find a lot diversity-very talented people in both contemporary and more classical styles. Enjoy your stay! :)

It's only natural that James Horner would use great horn lines. :)

Nice, but as our wise wise member Qccowboy would say, relying on film music for learning is not a wise step to take, even if film scoring is your objective - and there's plenty of great horn music outside movies too. Just my two cents. :D

Zeljko, you don't sound like you're going to come back, but welcome anyways

Have to dissapiont you :D

I'm just busy at the moment. Making some 'hits' for my 10 year old macho boy. Plus... working a lot in a mex restaurant.

;)

cheers Robin
