Hi.

I'm a music student from Mexico, living in Mexico City. I'm at a jazz & popular music academy. I'm 23 years old. I like jazz, classical, some kinds of progressive rock, some kinds of electronic music (not the one you dance) and of course, contemporary music. I play the piano.

I think this is a great forum because we can all exchange ideas and feedback and i want to thank the website(s) owner(s) because i think its really a great and useful idea.

I'm looking forward to the "harmonize a melody" contest because it is great to practice some composition techniques and to receive comments from all of you.

Well, see you all around.

Hello everyone,

I'm a 16-year-old composer/pianist in 11th grade in San Diego, CA.

Just joined the site.

Hi everyone, just wanted to introduce myself. :D

I've been composing for about two years, and have attended music composition summer programs twice. I've only composed a few pieces, mostly for solo piano, but I have a few things I've composed on Logic. I'm really excited to be here among fellow composers and hope to learn a lot from all of you!

My main instrument is piano, which I have been playing for about six years. I go to a relatively small high school, which has no music program aside from a singing group (and I don't sing, haha).

Hi everyone,

I'm a guy from Australia, I just started playing piano about 3 years ago. I can't actually read music, and the best I've ever done was play Axel-f for about one and a half minutes.

I actually compared playing the piano to rocket science, at least it takes you maybe 5+ years before your decent. Anyhow I discovered improvisation by just deciding to play randomly on the white notes and within about 4 days I felt like a virtuoso.

Well for about 2 years I got stuck on the white keys, sometimes playing the black keys to relax, and mucking around with jazz/blues with all keys, and finally i'm now making up my own scales to get different styles.

I have one of my songs which I did after 6 months of playing, which I still like, but it's an MP3. I'd post it in the piano critique forum but its midi only. I tried a conversion program but it sounded wacko. Anyone know of the best program for wav->midi? It was actually a wav of a wavetable card and not a real piano so its pretty clear.

I just play now because I find it so enjoyable, relaxing, and mind-healing. It was also very painful for a long time because playing can get repitituous and discording.

I can't really contribute to any actual composing, but my recordings are good (I have an awesome fantom-xa with piano expansion) which i'll upload as midis. However, i'd love to talk about the art and philosophy of improvisation. Can't find anywhere else to talk about it.

Thanks for reading :)

God bless,

Jensen

P.S i'm improvising on violin now too

Hello, I am a composer, a bad composer, but a composer all the less. I've loved music all my life, listenning to my parents oldies, and loving it, escpeccially Queen and the Beatles. I started writing my own pieces about a 3rd of a year ago, after being inspired by the one and only Bjorn Lynne. Since then, I have listenned to only the wierdest variety of Music, Noubu Eumetsu, Bjorn Lynne, Mighty Rhapsody/Thundercross, Persuader, Eminem, The Gorillaz, Queen, The Beatles, and some more I'm too lazy to type. So ya. I'm more of a musical enthusiast, a poser composer, but all the same.

Hi, my name is Will and I'm 16 years old. I've composed since I was 13, but only recently have I really taken it seriously. I write music in a bunch of different styles, ranging from the less cheesy side of dance music to neo-romanticism. My favorite composers are (more or less in chronological order) Bach, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Wagner, Mahler, Debussy, Schoenberg, Britten, Webern, Stockhausen, Reich, and Ran. I also enjoy some non classical electronic musicians, but moreso just for a bit of fun. I went to Interlochen Arts Camp as a Comp major last summer, where I saw what good composition was all about.

Hello there. I've been looking forever to find a forum like this.

The name's Guilt, I'm a 17 year old keyboardist/compser who's been doing this since I was 5, though professionally since I was 12. I'm still only in my second year of self taught bass but I can pick up things pretty easily.

I'm currently in a light Christain rock band who's been playing together for almost a year and a half. My little brother plays drums, and we also have to guitarists. Our goal was to have a solo in every song and so far, it hasn't been that hard.

I'm not that big on orchestral or classical music, but I do love jazz with a passion, and rock will always have a soft spot in my heart. As far as traditional piano playing, I'm not the greatest, but my talents on the keyboard are wide, from simulating guitar and bass at the same time, to drum faking that has gotten quite convincing.

Don't know what else to put, but I am looking forward to getting to know some others like me soon.

Until then, later.

Yay, I love how many Canadians are joining us! Welcome!

(Watch out for our Baron, though. He's not far from you, and he can be quite evil. * laughs *)

Thanks for the welcome. It's nice to see that there's a lot of people my age here.

I suppose since everyone here's been giving their real name, I might as well re-introduce myself as Adam Dincorn. The last name's from Romania and I don't really know what it means, but it's mine and only 4 of us in Canada have it, so I'm happy.

And as for the "Baron", thanks for the warning. I'll keep an eye out.

Heh. He also goes by Humnab. Hasn't been around much lately, but you never know.

HI Everyone! :D

My name is Chris Tillis. I'm 13 years old and the music i really like listening to JROCK ( Japanese Rock ), and.....uhhhh....that's about it. :) Oops, that isnt all, i also have a rock band ( www.monatori.com ) ( i'm bass guitarist and i dont even know how to play bass guitar :) ). band isnt really making much progress though for the time being. I can play the following instruments: Tuba, baritone, trumbone, trumpet, percussion ( duh ), and....that's about it

So I finally discovered Young Composers. This is the sort of thing I

Hey, you're closer to music as a main focus as some of us are. I'm in medical school, and Marisa's major is linguistics.

Heh. 'Tis.

Welcome, Hartogsveld. Don't worry about the whole age issue; so far we haven't cared about that particularly. And hey, any time you discover music it's a good thing, isn't it? * grins *

I am not entirely sure I fit into the concept though, as I am certainly not as young as the majority of those among you who have stated you age.

Young Composers welcomes all ages :D

I think the age group is between 15-30, however older people are encouraged to join to help out the younger or less experienced. We are a very openminded group with diverse backgrounds. Also, don't be fooled by the younger community. These guys are dedicated and know their stuff.

There's even a few of the youngers who could be more than a match for some of the more "experienced" or us.

Never doubt children.

Ya, I forget that one kids name, but he was a composer on some Jazz radio station about a week ago. He was 13! And already selling succesful compositions! So ya, thoe I hate to say it, age seems to mean less and less as time goes by.

age seems to mean less and less as time goes by

I don't know about you, but I found that to be funny. :)

Hi!

I'm Giselle.

I've lurked here a few times over the last couple years but only just joined yesterday. Just wanted to introduce myself! I've always wanted to get into composition, especially when I was a little girl and used to make up symphonies in my head and hum and make myself get teary like an idiot :) So one day in high school we were offered a student discount on Sibelius software and I bought it to try out my hand at composition, and I've been fooling around with it on and off, though my major now in college is not music. I am glad there is a cool place online I can go to hear others' compositions and get critiqued! I'm sort of shy in "real life" so it's hard to go around chatting up music department people at my college when I'm not in that school, though I've thought about it for sure :)

I'm so excited to get involved here! Maybe it'll be a start to something good!

Welcome!

You're not alone in that situation. Even for those who are less shy, the general experience I've heard about is that music departmentments are not very open to outsiders... that was certainly true in my case, so I've found Young Composers to be literally my most valuable musical resource.

And seeing as you've been lurking for long enough... what do you think of the new layout?

It looks great! I hadn't visited for a while and when I came upon the board again I was like, "whoa!"
