Swedish and English fluently

I want to learn Icelandic though...

Me too! It's awesome...

Norse  beats NORWEGIAN any day

One of my friend's entire family comes from Iceland and speaks Icelandic. The only thing he has taught me though, are how to insult people.

Since we are all saying what languages we speak...I speak English and Spanish fluently.

My mom and her whole side of the family speaks Sicilian though, and I want to learn that, but I just never have.

Hello. I'm Mahlon. My favorite thing to do is compose and play the piano. I am also interested in history, science, literature, philosophy and politics. (smart politics that is)

Welcome, or should I say, welcome back, Mahlon, you're a very old n00b. Glad to see you're here; if you're interested in literature, though, by all means visit my sister site, WildeWorld, where poetry and other forms of writing are posted and discussed.

Hi!

Way back in High School (specifically my Senior year--1995-96,) I thought for sure I was going to be a music composer. I went to the University of North Texas as a Music Composition major. I did not have the requisite instrumental skillz--I could (and still can) only noodle around on the piano a bit--but I played a piece for the guy in charge of admissions for undergrads into the Comp. program (or something like that--my memory of this guy's significance is hazy) and he pushed some buttons and admitted me into the program. I thought I was going to be a Superstar. For sure I was going to be a big famous composer of video game music. (Look, I was a kid, okay? :) )

I spent a single semester in the program, feeling outclassed by my "colleagues" (to my horror, they could all actually play instruments!) and feeling discouraged by the random-algorithm-generated electronic music that seemed to be in vogue in the program. Also, I noticed that video games were moving from composed scores to pop-music soundtracks. So after my first semester, I changed my major to English composition.

(I ended up, btw, in grad school for Philosophy, where I remain to this day.)

Having quit the music program, I continued to mess around a bit on piano and guitar, but with nothing like the enthusiasm or discipline as that with which I had approached music back in High School. And once I graduated from college, other concerns took over, and I ended up piano-less, and I stopped really doing music at all. Granted, I'd mess around with Noteworthy Composer every now and then, and I've got several little bits and pieces--themes mostly--I've composed over the years. But most of the music that has gone through my head has gone down the drain, never to be played or written down by me. :( I've not had any opportunities to play on instruments, and so am cut off from the main source of my creativity. :) :(

Here I am. I don't really have time for this. There is no time! But here I am.

Greetings from Belgrade, Serbia (not Syberia :(! I'm in my final year of studies in Belgrade Academy of Music. I play piano and sax (huuuge jazz fan) and was wondering if any of you can help me find some literature on COUNTERPOINT in modern context of XX century music. I'm writing a study of "Polyphonic Notebook" by Rodion Shchedrin and need all the help I can get! Thanx.

P.S. I'm gorgeous too :)

Sanja

Hello to you both, and welcome to YC. I myself am not particularly "into" Jazz (I am, however, very involved with philosophy), but I am sure are 8-10 people here who may be able to help you.

Hey there new YC:ians

Little Wing, I'd suggest that you speak with Robinjessome or Franzman since they both work with jazz 24/7 :(

I wish it was jazz I needed! But, no... I'm in the middle of an exhausting analitical work on an atonal cycle of contrapunctal pieces by a Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin. I need literature, a candle in the dark.. Anything! Thank you fish

V__V.. fish, ha... ha... how funny

There is only room for one gorgeous composer on this board, and that position is happily taken. :P

Yep, by me.

Most definitely.
