Hello, my name is John. I'm 15 and I live in England.

I've been composing for about a year and a half now. My first work was a four movement "Seasons Suite", and from there I went on to a Piano Sonata in C sharp minor. Over the last year I have composed three waltzes, two preludes, two more Piano Sonatas, a six movement Suite entitled "Scenes from a Village, Suite no. 1" and a Rhapsody in C minor (all for solo piano).

I am currently working on:

Piano Trio in G minor for Piano, Violin and Cello

Piano Concerto in D flat major

Scenes from a Village, Suite no. 2

Piano Sonata no. 4 in G major

Four Little Toys (Piano Miniatures)

Um, I'm not really sure what else I should say...Well, I hope that that will suffice.

Re: Guildhall-ers - keep an eye/ear out for Leslie Davis, good friend of mine who's in some sort of masters degree - opera performance something-or-other.

Hi!

I'm a 24-year old Finnish hobbyist composer with a 2-year background in composition. Practically everything I ever learnt about music is self-taught from reading books and haphazard experimentation. Compositionally I'm mostly interested in classical and soundtrack style music, but I have tried my hand at popular music also.

Currently I plan to take my composition to a more 'serious' level by applying to a college-level composition programme in the coming spring. I started taking piano lessons this fall and I'm also considering to start singing lessons with the aim of improving my voice so that I can sing ear training exercises plausibly.

I'm looking forward to getting to know all the people in here :)

Hi everyone, my name is Matthew Lee Knowles and I am a 22 year old composer, almost at the end of a composition degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, in London. I am also a pianist. When I was young I played tenor horn.

I work mainly as a conceptual composer, which means I do a lot of questioning about music and don't always work in traditional methods, especially when it comes to notation. I write a lot of graphic scores, which I think helps to release my musical ideas and give them more room to breathe. I often write event, or word scores, for example, if i want a flautist to play a series of very high notes and low notes, I will write this in words instead; I do this because I feel it is more successful for me, my mind and my music and also it immediately makes the performer think in a different, more inquisitive manner. Of course, this type of composition isn't for everyone, I just feel very comfortable writing like this!

I enjoy looking for art and music EVERYWHERE, be it on a train, in the shower or in your imagination, this is why some of my pieces are instruction scores, for example, get on a bus and listen, or, walk down a road and clap your hands. One such instruction score was to make 100 sounds, and was performed in quite a small space by about 150 people.

I am very interested in the relationship between the performer of music and the audience, and I have written many pieces exploring this; I often like to blur the line so much, that it is hard to tell who is who.

I am happy to share my pieces with everyone here and having discussions about the points I have made above. I will soon put some scores up (scores which I hope will generate lots of interest!) in the meantime, if you go to: MySpace.com - Matthew Lee Knowles - UK - Classical / Experimental / Other - www.myspace.com/composermatthewknowlespianist

you can see some scores and also listen to some music.

I also teach and write music for the theatre, having recently completed a score for Shakespeares "The Winter's Tale" and now working on the score for "August", a Welsh setting of "Uncle Vanya"

I can imagine that I am probably quite a different composer on here now, but I do write traditional music for traditional instruments as well and am happy to look at your scores and give my honest opinions.

I look forward to talking with you all about our music!

Matthew

Hello everyone....

I am rolan, 28, from the philippines, I am on my 2nd year in the Philippine Womens University School of Music taking up composition under Dr. Wallace Earl de Pue, professor emeritus of BGSU. It was this very same teacher who encourage me to try composition. I used to be piano major, a vocal and choral clinician but then due to some turn on the road, Dr. Wallace became my partner in mission. We are working on the publication of my composition and the royalty will go towards the education of many young people here in our country. Due to poverty, many young people cannot afford to go to school to have a proper education, thus their chance to life is much limited. When Dr. Wallace de Pue Sr, one of the De pue family musician whose sons are virtouso violinist and are graduates of Curtis, introduced me to the art of composition, life has never been the same. I am looking forward that in the future, I will be able to help alot of my countrymen. Now I take pride of being a composer. And I am very happy to be a part of this community of composers. More power to everyone and God Bless us all

Hi, I am 15 years old right now, having myself in attempt to compose a piano sonata and a symphony in the coming 5 years...

I find myself loving music from Beethoven most, as he actually have the balanced musicality, technique, and continuity among all his works. One of the finest pianist playing his works according to me is Barenboim: he beats Pollini!

That's all...!
