Abstract Dissonance

Abstract Dissonance

Although I'm not an avid piano listener, I enjoyed that piece. I liked the changes in emotions and articulation. It's a disturbing piece. Plus there's richness and much variety in it which add dimensions to the music. All those things kept me listening. Well done and thanks for sharing :)

what have you done with the old thread? what is new in this version?

I don't perceive anything too dissonant about the piece. Why that particular title? In any case, while the harmony and thematic material were very simple, I find they were very well exploited, although I did find the piece was lacking a bit in unity (coming back on previously stated motifs more often would tie the whole thing together). Nicely done :santa:

nivin: Thanks ;) I'm glad someone doesn't find it repulsive ;)

jrcramer: I had to delete it because I uploaded to many pieces at the same time.

Paranoid: It's *abstract* dissonance and not harmonic dissonance ;) Most of the harmony is pretty basic but there is some dissonance stuff going on in some areas(I intentionally chose some weird progressions to get a certain mood to contrast the main theme). The main theme is developed when it comes in the 2nd time quite a bit and the main motives were used exhaustively(a lot of copying and pasting ;) ) In fact, probably too much. For example, any time you see a triplet figure it will almost exactly be derived from the original theme.

Maybe you mean unity between the different sections though? They are not suppose to be related too much(different moods). Probably the ending, suppose to be cadenza like, could be improved to give more unity to the main theme(and tie it in more).

I have to say, I like your ideas here. I'm not exactly sure your progression is really dissonant or abstract really. Mind you, these sort of progressions have been used for about 200 years now. Some of Schubert's lieder, for example, have similar progressions to what you have here. His string quartets, as well! That said, I see what you were going for and think you did a good job at trying to 'redefine' what exactly constitutes dissonance. At times, I felt that you were about to go all out serial - but you restrained yourself. I think perhaps for a future work, you should try your hand it. I bet you'd be quite good at it.

I like the tunes. Well, it reminds me of some pieces that I hear. But that doesn't matter.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers!

the piece is interesting mainly for the pleasure of the themes could be used as a soundtrack to a movie, vaguely reminiscent of the ancient mode, the piece seems pretty close to a neo-romanticism

Yeah, I kinda had a thematic idea in mind when I wrote it(which I normally don't but I wanted to try and this is what I came up with).

I think this is wonderful!

--There's an excellent sense of drama: the articulations really bring just the right notes to the fore while letting some dissonance cover the background. The jarring, sudden loud notes aren't annoying, but actually add to the immersiveness of the piece.

--As for the tone, it reminds me of...pirates? Am I just confused? The rhythm of the triplets bashing into the half-note is what makes me think of that. As a result, I'm reminded of some sort of exciting voyage...But that's probably not what you had in mind, if anything at all

Thanks for sharing with us! This was very enjoyable! :D I'll give it a 10/10, and add it to my favorites, I liked it so much :phones:

The start of this piece conveys a sort of royal feeling that is very atmospheric

Nice surprise at 0:42 and the many sudden changes in dynamics I personally think it holds the listeners attention

Good contrast and the piece flows nicely

I like it but I dont think its particularly abstract (in a good way) because the melody sounds good.

@Serge: I can't hear pirates in it but whatever floats your boat ;) But I did kinda try to create an aggressive and exciting piece that was suppose to sound very emotional. The melancholy stuff was added after I composed the main part(basically the middle section starting with the Allegro). I tend not to think thematically when I compose but more abstractly(I have a vague sense of what I want to accomplish but no clear visual imagery in mind).

But if you hear pirates then it's pirates ;)

@yifei: Well, the abstract stuff has to do with the emotions. The dissonances come from the contrasting emotions presented. They are not clearly defined, so they are "abstract" and their contrast produces a mild dissonance(not harmonic dissonance). The abstract dissonance is not meant to be interpreted musically.

Now I did add the title after the fact so it might not be the best but I suck at naming things. Calling it "piece 3" is fine with me ;) But most people want some meaningful title because I guess it's easier to remember or gives more meaning to the piece.
