James Potter 2 Epic Trailer Score

hey , i liked how you are dedicated to make a full story of harry potter through your music .

i liked the intro . and i like how it changes to a bigger theme with the choir . good mixing , i think the part with the choir at around 1:00 needs heavier orchestration , or maybe its just the mixing . the choir sounds a bit lonely( i dont know how to describe it) but i think you should have added heavier orchestral lines with the choir . anyway i liked your piece , sounds like a harry potter thing:) . good job

btw you should comment on other people's work too .

You deserve to have a big, high paying, project come your way. I love your attention to detail in your music. I've started listening to your entire score you've made, and am really blown away.

I love this!! It really harks to Harry Potter, yet carries your style really nicely. The orchestration like always is really nice. Something erked me about the choir though throughout, dunno why... I really like how you moved the quiet intro into a full blown epic theme. I think the sound after 0:54 should be a little mroe obvious, since it's a big action sequence. Turn everything up, buff the brass+percussion, increase the intensity of the choirs.

Apart from that, you've done it again, a brilliant soundtrack, and I too hope you get the big break you thoroughly deserve :)

Thanks for sharing!!

hey there abd_zibdeh: im glad you enjoyed the piece and yes I know I should start commenting on other people's work too.. an I will, I've just been a tad busy :s

Hey CheeseLord:...in terms of the choir parts, haha I just got the choir software last week so im still exeperimenting with the sounds and how i can get a heavier sound on the final mix in Logic 9... something about the "normalize" button that I dont quite understand ...I'm always having trouble providing the brass a healthy dose of steroids haha

This for the sequel?

I like the string ostinatos. Flute ostinato could be a bit louder, I can't hear it.

Some of the breathy noises you were throwing around at the beginning could have used a slightly longer decay. They evaporated too soon!

1:04 was a bit muddy.

1:15 was a little messy. The brass is off with the choirs for the first few notes. Tighten up the rhythm there and clean up the mix so we can make up the individual lines.

Make sure that your reverb is more or less consistent throughout the piece. 1:05 for example, the choir and strings sound really dry but all the percussion around them is really wet. Even it out a bit so it sounds more realistic.

Neat track, Isaias! Keep working on the mix.

-John

Hey Isaias, this sounds great! I'm definitely not well educated on mixing/mastering, so I really can't critique any of that. I love the subtlety of different timbres in the beginning. Haunting and epic!

Hi Isaias,

Normally I don't comment on the work of folks who haven't commented much for others, but as I listened I figured I ought to give you some brief thoughts.

The entire mix is very quiet and flat...I was hoping for some more dynamic range and a bit more breadth to the sound. The writing sounds basically like trailer music, and since this is a trailer I suppose that's appropriate. I wasn't feeling the Harry Potter vibe, to be perfectly honest with you. A franchise like that demands a fairly creative and thematically rich treatment and thus far the series hasn't really gotten it since the original Williams scores and a few tracks from the sequels. The best I've heard has easily come from James Hannigan's scores for the most recent two games.

, for instance. Those scores really say Harry Potter to me. This says trailer.

That aside, it was nice to listen to. With some tightening up of the messy rhythmic changes and some work on making the mix a bit grander, you'll have a great trailer cue on your hands here. If you've got the time to put new tracks up here though then you can drop a comment or two on other folks' work while you wait for the upload to finish...it will help get you more comments and people will know that you're a helpful sort of person for the next time you upload something.

Hi there,

I think this was overall a nice work, though I have to agree with many of the comments made above. Another point is that at 0:40 the music sounded a bit quiet and awkward with the low line. I think you should used some more instruments there.

@ Marius: that Potter vibe you mean is indeed there in the scores of John Williams. However, they demanded a darker score from the next composers because of the fact that harry was growing older. There are many pieces I really like from nicholas hooper and patrick doyle, for example dumbledore's army really was a song that fitted really nicely in the film.
