Failed piece for jawoodruff TWO

Featured Replies

I can't seem to write a piece suitable for his level. I always end up just doing stuff which is easy for me, which is usually horrible for pedagogical purposes. It's hard to say whether I'll be able to finish a piece by the end of today, I have to fix up my piece for the other competition also...

This piece is pretty simple. I started out thinking about about Gagaku (Japanese court music), but then I started thinking about Satie. Meanwhile, everything other than those two sources slipped. I tried to avoid putting in things which would be unsatisfying to listen to, because I've gotten into the bad habit of putting intentionally awkward moments in my pieces. There were still a few things (like the ending), which I liked too much to remove, but I think there's some sort of balance to the piece which makes it listenable. You tell me. Please. Please comment. Say anything. Especially if you don't like it (and why).

Besides including these gagaku and satie styles, did you intend to give us some image or anything else extramusical with this piece? I liked it from the composition point of view though somewhat less from the aesthetic p.o.v., mainly because of personal taste. Though, I did not dislike it. You say it is a pretty simple piece, and again, from the compositional pov I would agree maybe, but playing this, especially as a beginner would be a big challenge to say the least. The knocking and expressive pedal use etc are nice touches. I am not a beginner pianist (though not advanced either to say the least) but I do know that I can not play the chords in left hand in the last 7 measures - and I don't have small hands (stretch up to a 10th, even an octave with 1-3 fingering is no problem). Arpeggiate? Anyway, I think it would have been to difficult for jason (legato octaves, large arpeggios etc, and the fact that it is no straightforward 'mozarty'-music - which makes it harder to understand), so good thing you did not enter it. As for the composition itself, as I said I kind of liked it. Thanks for sharing :)

PS No doubt a real recording would bring the piece come alive (I would be utterly ashamed if you were to tell me that this in fact is a recording)

I liked this from the aesthetic point of view as well as from the compositional point of view. And what roy said.

I've got big hands. I always forget about small hands.

As for extra musical ideas, I prefer to leave it open, feel free to imagine whatever image you like to accompany the music. I didn't have any images in mind.

I would record it, I just don't have any microphones. Anyone is welcome to attempt playing it, though, and I would be overjoyed to hear a recording.

The mood you set is enjoyable. The left hand is too prominent, and eventually becomes tiresome. You need to find a way to relieve having the left hand playing on every beat - especially as the work progresses. The right hand has interesting ideas, and is nice, just as it is. About the ending: it is rather abrupt. This is a good opportunity to use augmentation to slow down the work, so the listener is not unpleasantly surprised. peace
