NEED REVIEW: piano comp on a RUSSIAN THEME

Featured Replies

I call this work "Russian Fairy Tale".I created a russian theme and wrote down my thoughts without any serious structure, themes repeat from time to time in various forms; so is it a rhapsody maybe?? Tell me pls, i dont know).I need some review to improve my composing skills and this composition, sothank you for listening and I hope you enjoyed it)btw: Sorry, I cant upload any score.

NEED REVIEW: piano comp on a RUSSIAN THEME

My first comment is that it is very hard to review any work without a score - especially when you ask for an in depth review as you have done. From the outset, I get a very broken sense of composition - that is that your flow from one note to the next at times seems very broken - not sure if there is a rest or if that is the rendering. Structurally, this appears to be a sectional form as your dieas do return/repeat. Again, this is all without a score - so it's extremely hard to be certain what is going on. I'll give it some listens and if need be transcribe it by hand. So give me some time.

sure

Cool.

Judging purely from what I'm hearing, I appreciate that you're comfortable with the lyricism of composition, and things don't feel rigid and mechanical in the playback here (is this a midi playback or a live playback? I can't tell, and that's a good thing :))

Some things you might want to pay attention to is to use a more diverse range in the piano -- things stay pretty much in the middle range of the piano, and you're kind of missing out on valid ways to milk the piece for all it's worth. One part in particular that could have really benefited from more extreme ranges was about 2:55ish, when things get a bit more turbulent. Some deep bass notes could have driven home the climax well, and some softer high notes afterwards to mark the cool down from said climax. This is all purely conjecture, but it's something you may want to look at.

That's really the main thing that came to mind as I listened to this piece. I enjoyed what I heard  I hope things go well for you!

Thanks for sharing :D

Thank you for your comment! And thanks for listening!

I'm glad to know that you don't hear a "mechanical playback", i composed it all in a piano roll of a hiphop producing software (FL Studio) and spend days with making it sound like a "real pianist".

U are right about the range, if you'll find another "not so good things" (can't find the right english word for it) feel free to tell them.

I am going to correct some parts a little bit and upload the final version again.

Have a nice day)

It seems to lack serious structure.

It seems to lack serious structure.

I liked the chosen chords, but within that palette I found it a bit much of the same. You seem not to move to an other key. You can approach structure by deciding, before you write, ok, today I'm going to write a simple ABA form, or whatever you want to, but planning things like these are important to improve the overall idea. For example had you decided to add an alternating/contrasting theme, then you would have likelu transposed. ;)

One remark. If you want to improve your composing, as something different then improvising or click some bars in a piano roll, I would really recommend you write in a score notation programm (or by hand). at least creating a score helps ordening your thought (at least for me better than a pianoroll) and it can be shared here.

keep up!

I wrote closely around the same theme because I was trying to tell a story, but maybe I told it bad=)

I dont know how much a score notation programm will help me... maybe I'll try it out once, but I know, that the sounds there are awful; is it possible to create a nearly realistic piano playing in there? Also I don't know much about composing/music-theory.

Can you tell me what you mean with "You seem not to move to another key" ? )

You mean, not to write only in d-sharp minor but also in f sharp major?

I know that it's a hard work to click some bars in the piano roll to make it sound realistic... but I give my best.

thanks for listening)

It seems to lack serious structure.

usually i think about a serious structure, so that's why I wrote "it has no serious structure"... it was just an experiment to write something based on russian traditional folk songs.
