Winter In Liomril

Featured Replies

I've been asked to participate in the creating of music for an up-and-coming RPG in development! On the storyboard for the RPG, there's going to be a winter continent, apparently, so I immediately set about making a cold and chilly "winter" atmosphere -- at least, that's my intention. This is a first draft, and is subject to change according to how the game develops.Comments/thoughts/criticisms appreciated =)

Winter In Liomril

Hey serge! Really liking the song!! It fits very well with the mood you are going after. It actually reminds me of Kingdom Hearts and its soundtrack, a score I very much respect :)

This is very...just fitting for the atmosphere you have aimed for and it sounds great at the moment. Considering it is very late where I am, I can't think of any things to improve on, so great work! :D

really nice... I'm liking the atmosphere... reminds me of the old Diablo II soundtrack... not so much by the sound of it, but I think the style is similar. Good job. One thing I didn't like was the organ... not really sure if it works with the whole winter setup... maybe it does, but when I hear an organ, I immediately think of something sinister, now I'm not sure was that your goal, but in any case, it doesn't sound bad, I'm just not sure it fits. Very nice atmosphere, what did you use on this?

Matt:

Thanks man! :D That's quite a compliment! I didn't like that game much (I know, I know, I'm evil), but the music was really good.

Phantom:

The game's currently in development, so I have no idea if the sinister organ will stay or if I'm going to have to come up with something more playful. It's all basically up to how the game turns out.

I used Sibelius 6 to make this

Thanks for commenting, yawl :)

nice, nice! i like the end even more, it has more emotion to it, i'm actually doing a movie which involves winter, and piano, harpsi, oriental stuff works pretty neat on that kinda of "cold" emotion.

if i would have to improve this one i would recommend looking for chnages in the harmony and look for emotions that goes with the chord changes that evoke that kind of thing.

Didn't immediately get the Winter feeling from this. But when I put myself in the RPG mindset, I can definitely see how this would fit into a winter atmosphere. -The only RPG I ever played was EvE online-.

I liked the touch of light instruments used throughout the piece as well as the bells. at least I think those were bells.

Sounds chilly and mystical. Well that's what I get from it. This is really nice, and congrats on making music for an RPG. That's good props for the future there.^^ Heh even for a draft, it sounds good, love the organs.

The piece does evoke a sort of cold, chilly atmosphere with the timbres that you employed. Specifically, the high piano rolls and triangles hinted at delicacy like falling snow.

In terms of an role playing game, this piece brings to mind quite a different picture. I imagine entering a town that is covered in snow and completely abandoned. Houses are burnt, fences are falling apart, and the howling of the cold with is all that cuts through the deafening silence. The chord progression is sad and mellow, yet the timbre of the pad leads me to take on a sense of mystery. The player enters an old cathedral, as represented by the organ. A few pews are overturned and hymnals scatter the floor, many with pages torn out, perhaps to be used for kindling a fire at some point in the past. There is an inherent sense of wonder. What became of this place? What caused the damage, and why are there no signs of life? Perhaps there are clues in the cathedral...or within the vastness of the catacombs underneath...

The harmonies and orchestration, as I said, gives me a sense of sadness, mourning, and mystery. In terms of practicality, I am not sure if the piece would function efficiently over world music. It could make the player associate the continent with gloom more than winter, despite the cold sound. If the game goes in that direction, it will function well, and it could do well as a dungeon piece in my opinion.

Musically, I enjoyed it quite a bit. The pads/choir added a very organic sound to the piece, and some chords caught me a bit off guard in a good way. The piece developed with thickening texture and orchestration, but it never became too climatic or demanding for background music in a game. The only exception would be the cymbals which could maybe be brought down just a tad in volume in my opinion. Also, will you find a way to make the piece loop for the game?

Nice job! =)
