Overture

Featured Replies

This overture started sort of out of spite based on someones comments. My idea here originally was the slow alteration of a single chord - punctuated with rhythmic accentuations. Note: Finale botched up a lot of stuff here that just irks me! So, please look at the score as well. Overture

I like the mood it presents. It's very smooth overall, but the heavy dissonance keeps it from being... too smooth. I enjoy this piece.

I noticed that, nearly all of the time, the moving lines were obscured and nearly buried by the chords on top of it - Was this intentional? It would've been nice to have the chords slightly more in the background, despite the fact that the chord motion is the focal point of the piece, so the movement - Which is usually only carried by 1 instrument or section - Can be heard more, and keep it more interesting. Save the first 3 bars, every instrument is playing constantly - except the slapstick tongue.gif Maybe lighter orchestration would solve the problem and allow the moving lines to be heard more? Unless burying the motion (rhythmic accentuations?) was the goal.

But I do like it - It presents us with some food for thought. I really like your rhythmic ideas, and your minimalistic approach to this.

That's why I said Finale really botched this one up for me. The opening wind lines aren't audible at all in the rendering! I'll look at seeing if I can tinker with finale's playback to make it more realistic - I just don't know how to do that. Refer to the score to see how I wanted it - which, In many aspects isn't anything like how Finale played it. And that damn slapstick really pissed me off.... I really wanted it in here - alas, my paper score of it has it... so, I can imagine it.

wow, these are some heavy chords... I am not sure whether this piece is finished. It does not really sound so (to little contrast, for instance) but it is not posted in the incomplete section. I shall therefore treat this as if it were finished (and critique accordingly). although I have my doubts :)

you say you are going for a slow build up, with some rhythmic accents. I have to say that it was there, but not so really interesting (unfortunately...), since the chords are mainly moving in a raster of 4 or 8 measures. You try to provide rhythm interest on a micro level, but in the grander scale the harmonic rhythm is fairly the same. It has a little minimalistic flavour, but I would add some polyrhtyhm to add interest...

The orchestration seems OK, as I expect from you ;) , but the build up is only orchestrated in the crescendi, not really in addition of instruments. Basically all instruments play all the time. That is rather heavy for a single piece (is I stated before, I treat this as if it were finished, although it probably isn't)

What is with the title, it looks like Miltiades, is it a typo?If not, what does it mean?

Well, Herodotus mentions the story of Miltiades in his histories - and that's what i'm referencing here. I probably did spell it wrong though. :( Yeah, I wanted a full orchestral wall of sound for the entire piece. I just wish finale played it correctly!

GOOD MUSIC

Is very good, but this really has to take you somewhere else, this will be be overture of a large work ?

Sounds like calmed sea waves but with the imminent storm coming, am I wrong ?

It is for me make ends meat of what this is. Mainly because i can't follow it. So much dissonance and then it suddenly ends and making wonder what next. I do prefer, however, tonality over atonality. The harmonies and melodies lost me from the beginning. I give this a 3.5 stars

I like the complex, thick chords that don't sound incredibly dissonant quite a bit! There's also this balance of simple, calm progression and thick, very rich and heavy sounds.. Very well written, and no immediate comments on room for improvement.!
