The Solemn Bunny Parade

Featured Replies

This is a very old idea I've had for a piece of music that I've only just now gotten around to working for the solo piano.

Technically speaking for a moment, the piece is basically structured ABABCDCD, with a recap of ABAB then the finish.

The piece is about a bunch of rabbits coming around from all over the world and having a sleepover. They're sooooooo cute! :D :D :D

I hope you enjoy this -- I've put an awful lot of work into this.

Thoughts/comments/criticisms appreciated! ^_^ Thank you =)

In case YC decided to hate me (or are rabbit racists), here are the Box.net links to the MP3 and PDF Score.

The Solemn Bunny Parade

So...you got a really enjoyable song here. Then...you got the idea of bunny rabbits sleeping over and bouncing all around with super happy faces as they fly up in the sky to the song, and honestly...you end up laughing your butt off. Then at 1:50 I imagine a poor bunny who is missing out on the fun due to his injured leg as he sits there...staring at the other bunnies who hop in joy. At 2:20 I imagine another bunny coming and helping him join the bunnies. You made me go from laughing my butt off, to feeling incredibly sad, to unbelievably touched, and all this is from imagining a song with bunnies who have a sleepover. I don't have any words to describe what that feels like.

Now...the theme itself is actually really addicting. I enjoyed this song immensely...congrats. You made my love a song about rabbits xD

Great job!

Wow ... that interpretation for the slow part never occurred to me  I just imagined them sleeping and being adorable, as the lullaby plays ... but your interpretation adds an extra dimension.

Interestingly, someone else PM'd me and told me that section reminded them of the Elder Rabbit looking at all the youthful bunnies hopping around, having bitter-sweet memories... sort of the same idea.

Thank you so much for your comment! It really made my day :D

All I can say is: ADORABLE! This is a cute little piece. It really does look like little bunnies hopping around :P

One note: you have in places doubled the same note (i.e. right at the beginning middle C in both hands) but that's just a technical error.

But yea, nice little work here! Glad you posted it :D

Heckel

Oh, no, Heckle, actually the thumb-sharing of the Cs (and later the Fs) was on purpose :) Normally if I'd done that it would be a mistake, but in this piece, that's actually not the case.

I'm glad you enjoyed it Heckle! :D

Nice!

Some observations: I suggest you reemplace that fff with a sfz (it makes more sense)

Great work. F mayor is one of my favorite keys.

That's a smart little detail, Silva. I just read that and decided to do so and replace all the "fff"s with the "sfz" symbols  Thanks for that! It's the little things that matter sometimes

Quick note: fff is a dynamic. sfz is an accent. Keep that in mind when deciding to place one or the other, they are not the same thing and aren't interchangeable.

The blurb is so cutesie. ;D It makes me want to convenience a little. Sounds very clean and flowing, and the program and music match perfectly.

On the flip side, just as a personal thing, I think it's a bit too cutsie for how smart the music itself is. Kind of like it was completely written for an audience like us (composers some of who are wound up tight, others who like something 'out of the box' now and then, etc), and no one else. I don't know how much a non-composer would like this, other than it "sounds happy and cute." The intricacies would most likely be lost in translation at that point.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh, I know they're not interchangeable  I think the places I replaced them were appropriate though, and I think the suggestion was a good one.

I think your note about the music being more for composers ... there's some truth in that, I believe. That's very observant of you!

I find that if a piece doesn't pass my new "Is this something a composer should, within reason, approve of?" test, I just keep at it until I feel it's up to par with a composer's viewpoint. I don't mind if some of the intricacies of what I've done here are sort of lost on more casual listeners, as long as the end product is still enjoyable on the main count. And I'm pretty certain that even the more casual listeners will still enjoy it.

I'm also flattered you think my music is "smart" :)

Thanks for commenting, Peter -- I appreciate your feedback

Well, I'm not as passionate as you about cute bunnies... but the piece is jaunty and upbeat, int hat regard it's successful!

...Was I too brief?

I rather like the lighthearted vibe of this piece; it kinda just makes you want to sit back and smile. The softer part at about two minutes in was of particular enjoyment; it had an almost delicate sound that I could very easily imagine pertaining to a little bunny rabbit. The transition back into the main melody seemed a tad sudden, but slow builds aren't always necessary, and probably not with an energetic piece like this one.

Overall, I dig it. Good work!

Thank you Hugo -- I'm glad even those that don't have a great soft spot for bunnies enjoy this

And thanks Apatheria! I like the grace-note descent personally because it's like all the bunnies are popping up from sleeping and back to rejoicing after their peaceful nap -- at least that's what I imagine when I hear it :) I'm happy you dig it ^)^

Thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated.
