July 9, 201213 yr I compose many pieces for solo instruments. Whenever I want to upload them, I am faced with the problem that there is no specific section for solo instruments other than piano. As a result, I am being forced to upload them either in the piano section or in the chamber music section (mostly the latter). If we could have a specific section for solo non-keyboard instruments, I think it would be great. Maybe it would even generate more interest in composition for solo instruments. Thank you.
July 9, 201213 yr I can see what you mean, but i too would advise using the chamber music section. The reason why there is a sub-section for solo keyboard music is that due to its polylinear abilities, the majority of music written for keyboard instruments is unaccompanied. Works for monophonic instruments tend to feature a keyboard accompaniment which it would seem most appropriate to describe as forming a chamber ensemble. Coupled with the fact that, unlike the solo piano, in the concert performance tradition it is rare for a recital not to contain at least some duo repertoire, it would therefore seem appropriate to include unaccompanied works for these instruments in the same chamber music category.
September 19, 201213 yr Author I'll mention this to the Admin. Did you? I think it would be good to have a separate section at least for organizational purposes. It would also be recognizing composition for solo non-keyboard instruments as an independent genre in its own right, with its particular challenges and rewards.
September 20, 201213 yr I completely agree and I think luderart is right that a dedicated section would generate more interest. In the context of new music, I'd question the claim that "works for monophonic instruments tend to feature a keyboard accompaniment."
