Concert Overture in Bb Major

Featured Replies

This is a concert overture I came up with extremely quickly over the past week or so, based off of themes I rejected for a larger project I'm being a bit more picky about. It's mostly in the classical or early Romantic style and follows sonata form pretty closely, with a repeated exposition, a development, and an altered recapitulation.

Whoa, this is a little all over the place, which I guess makes sense considering the description. It never really got out of hand though, which is niceMaybe a more polyphonous section near the end to benefit?
As a whole, it's quite nice. I can't see any major problems with the orchestration, except perhaps that I could see a lot more percussion being used, since there are indeed so many parts to the whole. Voice leading issues sometimes (first big theme) but again, nothing impossible.
Cheers!

Hmm... I enjoyed the 1st half, the 2nd half was more messy, most after rehearsal G. This piece has a lot going for it, it has quirky melodies, energy...one important thing it lacks is focus. I think this piece deserves a more grand ending than the current one...it just feels too sudden and random.

Orchestration is alright, though I'm concerned some of the wind solos will be drowned out easily. Also, you won't get much pitch from those high violin pizzicati, I think a better substitute would be bells...or harp doubling or something.

I really enjoyed it! The first theme especially that is really bright and forward-driven... At some places it does get a little messy, but maybe that's also because of the sibelius (I guess) sounds the playback uses... the score looks more organized... There is some great material in it. I would work on it more and give it a more coherent structure if I were you. :-)

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. It's so great to be able to be back on this site regularly and get such good feedback!

I think one of my major problems when trying to compose in sonata form is thinking up an engaging development section that doesn't sound too random and crazy (starting at Rehearsal G here). There's not really a lot about this subject available online.

I also agree with Danish in that the current coda is a bit out of the blue, sounding more like contemporary film music than the period music I'd been trying to create.

I'll try to sharpen my thematic development skills and put out a revised version soon. Thanks again all.

Interesting. The use of old themes is pretty clear, as it definitely sounds pretty segmented. I really do enjoy the themes, but it just doesn't feel very connected, both in character and in flow. And especially in the begging you go at what feels like a mile at a minute in changing the theme and character before the the a rehearsal letter D which you do a better job of developing. The piece overall feels like you could build it into several movements of a piece and it would work quite well.
