Overture ''Macbeth,'' Op. 59

Featured Replies

Hello everybody!

I have decided to compose an introducing overture for Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth. It's for my thesis for music.
With the music I have tried to make the characteristics of the main charachter Macbeth clear to the audience.

To develop myself, I always try something new with all my compositions. So, I sometimes write for a completely new instrument to learn more and to develop my skills.
This time I wanted to write a piece, which is based on five themes:

  1. Ambitious
  2. Noble & loyal
  3. Cautious
  4. Brave
  5. Opportunistic

On the basis of these five themes I composed the music. The inspiration for this technique came from Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel:

In the scherzando finale I want to emphasize that, although Macbeth is a tragedy, the play ends pretty optimistic.
Scotland the brave is played when Malcolm becomes the new king of Scotland. Huray!
Although I am not very satisfied with the result, I like the experience with this completely different idea of only using themes and motifs for an entire play.

Enjoy!

Maarten

Great Work!

I'm happy to see your evolution as a composer. I like very much the way you take advantage of the colors mixing unexpected instruments and your harmonic languages.

The music you write "enters" my mind straightforwardly, and I love it because it's fresh ....

Perhaps you're not totally satisfied ( I guess we should never be with our works) but this is nice work and coherent from the first to the last bar.

I  love Macbeth story (big fan of Verdi's opera) and your music took me to that worl.

Congratulations!

¡Muchas gracias, mi amigo!

I love Macbeth's story too! It's a masterpiece and in my opinion the best tragedy of Shakespeare.

Thanks for sharing your opinion.
