My first chamber music performance coming soon...

Featured Replies

Nov. 24, Sunday will be the first day that a piece of mine will be performed for an audience, which will be my church.

I am conducting it because I write music, especially at the end where the tempo becomes very slow. It is just a small low brass ensemble..

The video I have now is a rehersal clip... I will update this thread when I get the performance recording. Hopefully with less breathing lol 😄

I'll be working on better conducting lol.....

Wow, that was really impressive! I love brass ensembles, and your piece capitalized on the bright and brassy sounds. Great job! I hope your piece is well-received!

Thanks @Tónskáld

I appreciate your comment! I'm sure it will be well received, the audience is on the older side....

Aw, be gentler on yourself. I think audiences of all ages would enjoy this!

I sure hope so, because my brother who is slightly younger than me is not supportive at all 😄 XD. Thanks again.

Welcome to the world of being a composer! I have several siblings, and I can't say that any of them were very supportive of my composing. I mean, they didn't antagonize me or anything, the just didn't understand why I had to spend so much time doing music growing up.

well, i shouldn't say not supportive, he does listen to my music and tells me it is garbage......

Its whatever, I tend not to listen to him anyway, thanks for being my moral support!

Yes, please keep posting stuff on here. And please stop prefacing it with "this sucks." It doesn't suck. And neither do you!

Lol, ok I'll keep a note of that. Probably should change my username soon....

This does sound great! Nice job! Short rant incoming though.

I've spent plenty of my life being down on myself so take it from me: You're not always gonna find people who will build you up at all the right times, so you gotta be comfortable doing it yourself when you need to. It's tempting to keep fixating on your insecurities instead of your strengths. I'm guessing you say that you suck or that your music sucks because it's less painful/vulnerable if you say it before someone else can. In the long run, you're not doing yourself any favors though. As much as you enjoy writing music now, trust me you'll love it even more when you're not second guessing yourself or having to downplay your talents.

Okay that's over now. This was a really nice little piece. I hope your church enjoys your writing! Keep it up!

Awww, this made me tear up a little. 😭Very well said KJ. I've been through a similar story arc, and I'll wager most artists do. A wise person once said, "To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong."

Truly the saddest thing is to rob the world of our gifts and talents just because the only people thinking our creative outflow was wrong... was ourselves.

thanks guys, i appreciate the comments and emotional support.

I think I say it sucks before others say because I tend to show this music to people my age who aren't in band, people who listen to rap...

Also it has been better for me historically to say that something sucks then they listen to it and they are all like "wow that was really good"

as for an example, my band directors make me play(tuba etudes) for them so I can compete in UIL region. He told me to "play your worst etude" and I said "they're all pretty bad" he laughs it off and I play all of them and then he gives my some minor fixes like exaggerate dynamics but tells me that I was really good with the technical stuff and note accuracy.

so yea... I think my problem is that I don't want to set the expectations so high then failing people with uninteresting music.

It is definitely something I will work on. Thank you guys for your help.

I'll be changing my username....

Here we go my guys!

It is always special to have a composition connect with an audience (/congregation) like that. You wrote a beautiful work which you should be proud of. Congratulations on this performance.
