Scherzo and Variations for Piano and Orchestra

Featured Replies

This is a Scherzo and Variations that I just finished.  It is my first finished piece for piano and orchestra.  Note:  each variation is followed by a short (or sometimes not so short) piano cadenza.  The theme is in 6/8.  The first variation is a 2/4 variation of the theme.  Variation II uses irregular meters and frequent meter changes.  Variation III is a slow 3/4 version of the theme.  Variation IV is in 2/4.  Variation V is the finale and is a fast 2/4 version of the theme.  It explores the triplet idea in fast runs up and down the keyboard.  I didn't write this piece to be particularly difficult nor virtuosic but the final variation is the most difficult and there are moments in the other variations that are difficult.  Overall I have to say that this piece is a little rough around the edges and the cadenzas could definitely use some more work, but I'm happy with it as it is and I don't know if I'll work on it more ever.  I rarely revise my music, but I would really appreciate your opinions and suggestions.  I have a midi instead of a score.  Thanks for listening.

You have put a lot of work into this which shows. I personally think the sound quality of the MIDI lets it down a little, as it makes it sound like video game music from the 90s!

You are welcome to send me the xml of the score, so that I can run on my software so we can hear the difference....

Thank you for your input!  I am not sure if I know how to make an xml file out of my midi on my old machine (how do I do that?), but I will be working on this in MuseScore to properly publish a score and hopefully a better quality mp3.  And I do admit that video game music seems to influence all my compositions at least a bit.  Thanks for your comments!  I took me a while to write as I wrote basically one variation at a time.  😃

this is amazing. your orchestration is otherworldly! Love the counterpoint.

@Left Unexplained Thanks!  It's just a standard chamber orchestra with solo piano - no percussion or pitched percussion included besides timpani.

Want to give me the .xml and I will export the Noteperformer version of your song?

I haven't imported this midi into MuseScore, so I can't create an xml file but I might just do that now - it's about time and I have some free time.  Thank you for your help in advance!

Yeah I hope for a better midi of this
