Short and simple for strings and oboe

Featured Replies

Hey! I'm pretty satisfied with this simple piece of music, but I wonder if I should keep it in 3/8 or change to 3/4?
Also, should rather write quarter rest after an 8th note or insist on writing two eighth note rests.

I sped up the mp3-file a bit, so it's easier to listen through the whole piece.

Usually 3/8 is used for pieces that are fast enough to be conducted/thought of in 1.  If your piece is slow enough where every beat is conducted than 3/4 seems more fitting imo.  Since as you say, you sped up the piece, it's up to you which you go with.  If you opt for the slower version use 3/4, if the faster version 3/8.

I like the music - it sounds almost baroque in it's approach and use of sequencing to create development.  Sounds like you could use a secondary theme in the relative major or in a closely related key.  Nice job!

I wrote it in 3/4 now and look how much cleaner it looks and easier to read. Thanks!!
Earlier I thought of making a new part in major key but I wanted to keep it short and melancholic.

Name suggestions for this tune, anyone?

The melody is memorable and solemn with a touch of the baroque. When I listen in my minds ear to hear what comes next I can imagine a choir as if it were an introduction to something profound. I'm a sucker for a good melody and I've played your piece a few times now. Thank you for sharing, its beautiful.

It's definitely a 3/4 piece. Your rescoring for 3/4 also 'looks' better which is a good sign.

Good piece by the way. It sounds complete as it is. However, if you wanted to extend it, it looks like a very good basis for a set of variations.

Thanks, you guys, for encouragement and help. I uploaded it on YouTube with sounds from Logic Pro X to give it a little more life:

Olov,

You were looking for a title. Unfortunately, I don't know Stockholm, but a quick look on Google Maps would suggest:

"Walking beside the water in Djurgården"

or some such beautiful place. In your music, I can smell the salty, sea air, but there is also a gentle feeling which evokes the lovely grass and trees of one your beautiful parks. I feel Sweden or the Swedish language deserves to be in the title because there is definitely a Scandinavian flavour in there.

Thanks a lot for all your help comments and kind remarks. First I was hesitant about releasing the song but when I heard your comments, especially Papagenos about the melody (which I will never forget), I decided to have it recorded. What I realised here was that the oboe-melody that I actually wrote 2013 was so low in register that I could rather had written it for English horn, since it's much easier to keep the intonation in higher register.

This wednesday we released it on YouTube. Enjoy:

Thank you, guys! Yes I really recommend commissioning your piece to be played by live musicians. You learn so much from working with humans as opposed to software only, and also the sound of a live recording is just unbeatable, it feels like magic. Has any of you tried this and what's your experience?

Thank you so much! I take it you're an oboeist which makes it extra good to hear

The music has a slight "Yiddish" eastern European flavor to it .... and yes I am an Oboist.  The Oboist in the video played quite nicely too!

I know what you mean. Interesting observation. Cool! Thanks

The range was a little bit low for an oboe, could better be suited for english horn, but I didn't think about that 2013 when I wrote the melody 🙂

I think it is a pretty nice piece! I do feel that this idea can be developed on much further and can be explored to greater lengths. Perhaps you could try varying the reprisal of the A section to make it more unique.

In the next to the last bar, the harmony would sound stronger with a seventh in the D chord, and would avoid the parallel octaves between oboe and viola.

I would change the viola's A to a C.

Cheers,
Jer
