What's your favorite waltz?

Featured Replies

Many different composers throughout music history have written waltzes - from Viennese through Russian and others.  What is your favorite?

I like Khachaturian - Masquerade Suite - Waltz for it's chromatically non-functionally moving bass line and an intoxicatingly dreamy melody.

I can't say it's my favorite, but i like. I think it's not known so much here;

for guitar ;

Gran Vals for guitar, by Francisco Tárrega (jump to 1:28 if you want to skip the intro).

Sibelius' Valse Triste.

Though I do also really like Russian Waltzes like those from Khatchaturian and Shostakovich.

This is one of Chopin's less famous waltzes - The Waltz in Ab major Opus 42.  I heard it for the first time at a concert, at a very fast tempo, performed as an encore by a touring Chinese pianist.

G'day @PeterthePapercomPoser,

My favourite waltz overall has got to be "Valse Mélancolique" by Emīls Dārziņš. It's apparently his only surviving work too, making it all the more special.

I love not just the Waltz but all five pieces of the Masquerade Suite - a Khachaturian fan here!

Love this unique one greatly too!

... And I really Iike how the pieces posted here are the less known ( with alr two which I'd say are alr my v few favorites )

I don't exactly have a favorite waltz but there is this short, simple ( definitely ) waltz ( or at least waltz-like ) piece ( though not titled as such ) that's abt just as close to my heart, but for the longest time ( longer than the two above ) :

Grieg - op.71, no.7, " Rememberance "
