Trois Hymnes du jour Quatuor de Flûtes - Matin Hymne, Apres Midi ....

Featured Replies

This is a suite of three hymns for flute quartet.  This is morning.  All feedback most welcome.

I am adding the afternoon Hymn and the evening Hymn.

  • MJFOBOE changed the title to Trois Hymnes du jour Quatuor de Flûtes - Matin Hymne, Apres Midi ....

Matin: I overall liked it. I used this one to explain a little about transposing instruments to my friends, so thanks for that lol. There are some rapid staccatto parts that I cannot really appreciate (M28, Fl.) on a first listening but that's just a detail and it might have been because of my headphones. The implicit rythm of this piece and the idiosyncrasy of the instruments that conform it makes me feel some sort of vulnerability, the kind you feel when you just wake up and feel disoriented... You could stumble and fall at any moment.

• Après midi: very cheerful, delicate in some parts. The syncopated passages that start to stain the piece and mix with the carefully put articulation around 0:40 are very satisfying. It is truly a good quality sequel to the prior hymn.

Soirée: whereas it maintains some resemblance with the prior hymns it also transfers that tiredness feeling when the daytime is close to expire very accurately in my opinion. The intelligent mix of slower tempo, less stacatto passages and a much more calmed introduction and final is what I believe that makes this effect so convincing to me.

In summary, another coherent work that I enjoyed listening and that I will definitely listen to again. A tiny detail regarding the score: check the last measure of the last hymn, the pianissimo is a bit off the bar.

Kind regards,

Daniel–Ømicrón.

Interesting pieces. It is always difficult to write for several instruments of the same family. It's challenging.

But the richness of the textures and the balanced counterpoint make them worth listening to.
