Hope you all enjoy it but I'd love any feedback you might have! This is probably my last foray into "vanilla Classical" for a little while as I'd like to experiment a bit before returning to my "roots". I think this is successful, I put a lot of effort into overall structure, and thematic material - I think where it might be lacking is in textural variety. I didn't intend for a particularly virtuosic piano part and so I'm happy with the part the piano plays (intentionally the piece is very much shared between solo and orchestra, with the development intentionally where the two main themes sort of battle it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7E2UQ7fiKI I've had a little bit of fun with this video using free use videos, but attaching the score in case it is too difficult to follow the score closely on the video! The woodwind passages seem too exposed to me--I thought it was a concertante piece with multiple soloists in the orchestral opening! I think common practice c. 1780 would be to avoid this by using the woodwind CHOIR as a whole to compliment the string passages. Also I felt a sort of LEGATO VS. STACCATO tug of war that took me out of the mood I thought you were developing quite nicely with the strings/piano. The piano is percussive--so it would be nice to compliment this with a more legato style in the orchestral commentary! Let the clarinet/oboe sing a bit! The piano has no choice in its methods.... Also, I wouldn't necessarily abandon the strings (certainly not the Bass/celli) when the woodwinds are working. I might prep the cadenza for a few more beats--a little abrupt maybe? I thought the recall of the main themes wasn't all that clear in the initial piano cadenza. Maybe I'm wrong---But the familiar/different thing is the magic that makes it all work.... Really echoes one of Mozart's piano concerti in its tight form and sprightful joyousness, not to mention the expressively complex piano passages. I will say I'm not an expert on 18th century classical form or instrumentation, but I certainly enjoy this piece as it is. That being said, @Rich brought up some good points that you might want to check out. Thank you so much for posting!
