So I write classical music, and it's probably a fair assumption that if you are reading this then you are in some way involved in the composition or performance of music of this nature. I also play in a modern "progressive metal" band, I happen to enjoy shredding up solos on the guitar as much as a great symphony - anyways I'm curious what you guys listen to while not listening to classical music (hence the poll), and what modern music you recommend (of any sort) for other trained classical musicians like yourself who have sophisticated tastes and who demands more 'substance' in their music than can be provided by, jessica simpson, for example.

NOTE! this is an official apology concerning forgetting jazz on the poll! Don't deal punishing blows to my body with a saxophone! please!

I can start the list off (the following will be hard rock groups that you might enjoy if you like both extremely technical music, and fast metal)

The human abstract www.myspace.com/thehumanabstract

Protest the hero www.myspace.com/protestthehero

You left off jazz - I find that many classical fans are also jazz fans, and vice versa.

Thanks CalTech - I was about to freak on the poor boy, but you beat me to it. Yeah...Jazz is an important alternative.

For me though, I listen mostly to jazz...so classical is what else I listen to....along with a lot of other stuff.

current poll results from top to bottom: 1010111

in binary: 77?

Classic rock: AC/DC?!?! Where the hell do you put the Beatles? I just clicked classic rock 'cause it seemed to be the best choice. And I love the Chili Peppers, but mostly: Beck, Bjork, and They Might Be Giants for modern rock. I guess I do listen to a little 'pop' music, although my definition of pop is different, probably: Green Day, John Mayer, James Blunt, Ben Folds, Modest Mouse.

Yeah this is a bit ambiguous in the distinction between them...

I'm a very diverse listener: mostly jazz, some classical as well as interesting pop music:

Prince, Michael Jackson, Bjork, Rufus Wainwright, Tom Waits...

The drum set should never have been invented, says I... I clicked ''Modern music, isn't that an oxymoron?''

Agreed, I cannot answer the poll question. If I am not listening to classical music, and am listening to any kind of pop, then I am listening to old time jazzy stuff (or just old classics) like Tony Bennett, Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, Billie Holliday, etc. I love Bernstein and Gershwin to death. I also like some classic rock but not too much. My favorite is James Taylor. I also like The Eagles. If I am not listening to classical or pop then I am listening to soundtracks. I have spent about 3,500 hours (I did an estimate and some math) listening to The Lord of the Rings soundtrack alone since I got them about 4 years ago. Obviously this is my favorite soundtrack. Other soundtracks that I really love are The Omen, Witness, King Kong, The Fly, The Aviator, Star Wars, The Godfather, The Mission, Apollo 13, The Silence of the Lambs, and March of the Penguins. I would probably break it down like this: 50% classical, 45% soundtrack, and 5% pop.

What I cannot stand at all is any kind of rap, country, disco, heavy metal, and depressing rock (like Nickelback, Creed, and Evanescence). So, basically the longer ago it was the more likely I am to like it.

I absolutely love every single album of Steely Dan

Bernstein is amazing!

...I'm sorry, you think Metallica is heavy metal? Clearly, you do not know that genre too well...

Metallica are thrash metal!

Heavy metal is Black Sabbath in it's early years, then Judas Priest, then the NWOBHM which then brached out into thrash, death and so on.

I don't really listen to much music that isn't 'classical' but i do still listen to Iron Maiden (going to see them in december!) Judas Priest and Megadeth (the real kings of thrash, screw metallica).

I also enjoy listening to Pat Metheny, Wes Montgommery and Pat Martino

Strangly enough, 'all other music' or popular music (which is what i'm guessing you meant?)still continues to be popular because of lyrics.

Ok fair enough if you don't like it, that's up to you but you can't really say there's nothing to study. It's like saying alot of classical music is boring because there's nothing going on because there's no vocals to drive it forward, (i don't agree with this statement btw, i'm just giving an example  )

Lyrics are just another instrument to the music, they don't hamper the song, they enhance it and whatever mood you get from the music. If you listen properly there's a lot going on behind the vocals.

Lyrics can still be innovative (tho granted it is rare nowdays) Prog rockers Coheed & Cambria are a good example of this in that they have a whole story behind those lyrics,(like 'Yes' etc) yet you can still listen to them regardless as to whether you are aware of the story. And the music is f***ing awesome.

Another example of innovative vocal use; SikTh. 'Nuff said haha.

Now when I say popular music I'm talking about rock(and whatever sub genres) and the pop of nowdays which still involves playing a bloody instrument! Anything like moronic rap & hip hop, (apart from a few exceptions) souless X-factor-esque crooners and dance orientated music then yes, fair enough there is practically nothing to that music. it is all mindless dross.word. lol

haha wow sorry guys yeah guess I blanked last night, should've put jazz on that sucker, along with blues I guess too, oh well, the post is still accomplishing what I intended at least (finding out what people listen to beyond classical)

When I am not listening to classical, I am usually lisening Christian worship music, and occasionally Celtic.

I'm another jazz fan...though I listen to plenty of other stuff, too: Rock, Folk, New Age, Minimalism...hell, I'm listening to some really good barbershop right now.

I like gangsta rap

hmph. there's no experi-vant-new-weird-america-apocalyptic-pseudo-banjo-space-ballad option.

o darn

I would dare say that I listen to the 'alternative' genres far more than I do classical. Of these I rather enjoy . . .

-Metal - Various styles, but I generally draw the heavyness line a little bit before Meshuggah. I like the more melodic metal ala an Opeth, Lamb of God, or Metallica. Black Sabbath, Megadeth, and Pantera are some other favourites.

-"Prog" - Robert Fripp, particularly as a member of King Crimson, is a personal favourite. Dream Theater is similarly awesome. Brian Eno has his moments.

-Pop - I'm especially partial to the 80's brand of it. Prince is a personal hero, Michael Jackson would be if he could keep his hands to himself. David Bowie, absolute yes. Recently Gnarls Barkley, The Gorillaz, and select singles have caught my attention. Disco is also fun to listen to.

-Heavier Rock - Once it stops sounding like country, I start getting interested. Led Zeppelin comes to mind along with Guns 'n' Roses.

-Electronica - I don't listen to the genre that much, but I can enjoy it a great deal. The Orb's dancier songs, and a lot of the Prodigy's material hit the spot for me. Aphex Twin can be fun too.

-Folk - A very rare indulgence, and I generally only listen when it's mixed with some other genre. Van Morrison is a favourite.

-Video Game Music - Not a genre, but probably the category of music I listen to more often than not. Sakuraba, Uematsu, and Mitsuda have had a large part in sculpting my musical style.

-Jazz - I don't listen often, but when I do, I really enjoy myself. I need to check out more stuff.

-Modern Rock - Not a lot from this category that I like. Mostly the retro bands like The Hives and the White Stripes grab my attention. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are often sweet as well, Wolfmother is a pretty neat up and coming group, Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand occasionally hit the spot for me too.

That's the short list of it all. There's more stuff that I listen to that I wouldn't know how to classify or just can't think of right now.

Yes, yes they are. There's one of those bands that slipped through the cracks.

i'm actually surprised that so many people selected the "popular music, isn't that an oxymoron?" choice, I imagined there would be more classical music fans who appreciated modern music than vice versa
