Chopinesque.. Ok so this is a serious work.

First off, if any of you would care to convert this to midi for me, then I would be happy and attempt to give you a high five.

I've spent the past 3 days staying up late and waking up early to work on this composition for piano. My first serious go at my demo version of Finale Print music. I can't think clearly at the moment, ask questions and give comments.:) :w00t: :w00t:

The piece was okay, I thought the left hand should have had a bit more variation than it did (measures 93-99 seemed out of place and random), and some of the jumps you asked of the right hand were damn near impossible (measures 79 and 81). Also, the better part of Page 6 followed the same rhythmic pattern, so it got old quickly. The harmonies were very nice throughout the piece, I particularily enjoyed pages eight through ten. Measures 192 to the end, though were anticlimactic and a rather dull ending to the piece. With work, it can improve much!

I think some of the accents were out of place, but still, not bad.

yes.. this is a very hard piece to actually play. but as a listener, i really enjoy it.

i listen to what i compose and cant stop.. thats one thing so wonderful about technology and its ability to do things for us. You must listen anyways or you're blindly composing

easily adaptable music.. once i've gotten the hang of finale a little bit i'll focus on that.

measures 79 and 81 arent impossible!! i have big hands. measures 93-99 is the beginning of the 2nd movement. the preceeding measures repetitions of theme were supposed to lead into the new phase

while I really like those particular measures musically, I'm wondering just how truly playable they are - starting at measure 132.

Are you able to play that section yourself, at that speed?

The end could use some spicing up. After all those technically demanding passages, it does seem anti-climactic to have all those note doublings that basically negate the existance of two hands.

Also, harmonically, why not avoid your tonic for a while before the very end? The piece just sits on F for 2 pages, then the final chord arrives, no preparation, nothing. Why not create a pedal tone, or something that implies some sort of phrase in the bass? A rising scale that culminates on the dominant? or on a surprise note? So that the final chord comes as a welcome conclusion rather than just "oh, another chord of F".

Hm. I'm not sure what to write about this one. I like your main theme, and I like what you do with it throughout the course of the piece. However, I'm concerned that your musical development in this piece is more along the lines of embellishment (albeit ridiculously complex embellishment) rather than true musical variation/development. This is pandemic in young composers' piano pieces. Also, I don't think the overall form of the piece best suits what you're doing. The middle section is virtuosic and impressive...so why not end with that instead of going back to the simpler first theme? It's rather anticlimactic the way you have it right now.

Also, in the virtuosic section there are indeed a few sections that are unplayable. You need to go through the section with a fine-toothed comb, make up fingerings of your own, and find these places. Right now it's (in my opinion) more difficult than it needs to be because of the octaves all over the place. If it were a single running line of 16th notes (with accents if you like) then it would be much more possible to play.

thank you. all your comments were very helpful. I'm printing out the scores right now so that i can do some fine tuning at a real instrument.

I see the piece as just trying to show what its like to squeeze music, if music could be squeezed. Thats why I end with the same theme as the beginning. Music is very flexible. To be honest, I just kind of threw the end together. Ears are very sensitive to lack of work. haha

Hmm...I'm not sure what to suggest for this one that hasn't already been said. I like the use of dynamic and rhythmic variance; it's a nice way to keep the piece from getting old.

Alas, it does get old because it does not stray from a very flashy and quick pace...some slowdown wouldn't hurt. And fix the ending, I hardly noticed it was over - I was just hoping it was transitioning into a contrasting section but it just sort of ended.

Needs some refinement, but I enjoyed listening to it and your knowledge of piano is evident, if not particularly well represented by this piece.

Good work :)

I really enjoy listening to this one, because the variations in the middle are unique and exciting. However, when I view the score I am forced to look elsewhere for intrigue. The only thing that I find funny in your notatition is, of course, the ubiquity of the accent mark. Many others have said it, but perhaps I can reword their complaints - it is not commonly used as articulation indicative of melody. What I am familiar with as Chopin is a style of music combing different layers and contrapuntal lines to bring out the melody, which you have skillfully done. I cite his Polonaise in Ab (Op 53). Take a look at the sostenuto section before the final recapitulation and coda. He has a long gauntlet of sixteenth notes with no clear melody, unless you pay attention to the accents. He separates the melody not only with these accents but a clear indication on a seperate layer (a half note under the harmonic texture). This more cleanly defines your melody.

I see why using short notes is optimal in this fast-paced piece, but it seems a little like an excuse to overwhelm the accents.

First, the purpose of composing is not to create a hard piece to play, your job is to create a piece which can be heard twice not once with no interest.

Second, your piece is just something for piano and there is nothing interested in it. just 1000000 notes written on paper. can you tell me what is the purpose of such a piece since its nothing like CHOPIN?
