December 9, 200619 yr Yes...another project of mine. I REALLY like the premise behind this original game though, take a look at the description: "...the project is a mix of comedy and seriousness in a different sort of fantasy setting; It takes place after the final boss is defeated, and deals with the aftermath of the dissaperance of monsters and villans, where dragons are declared an endangered species, heroes are out of jobs, elves are entering an industrial revolution, and dwarves are laboring for minimum wage in human sweatshops. All in all, it's looking to be a different kind of RPG, with both comic and serious elements." Anyway, so far I've got what may become a boss battle theme, so take a look and let me know what you think! :) After Saga - Boss Battle!
December 9, 200619 yr Author Thank you very much, guys, I'm glad you like it! I'm working on some more pieces for this game, so I'll be posting them later. :P
December 10, 200619 yr Love it! But I can't for the life of me figure out what those precussion instruments are.... Sounds like a metal kitchen sink being beaten with a wood stick :P Magnificent! :P
December 10, 200619 yr Marius - you know that I cannot really tell you anything about the compositional aspect of this as far as form and analysis goes. However, I can tell you that I think it is probably your best orchestration in my opinion. I love Hero's Hym. I love your piano stuff (esp. Madness for Six Hands). Yet this is as good in a different way. I also loved the percussion. I always fall for this kind of syncopated stuff (at least it sounds syncopated to me). I also love that you did not do the usual stuff with your harmonies. The first chord progression that sort of starts it out finished in a clash sounding thing. I thought that was really classy. I thought the same thing about the third chord before the melody started up. If I was playing this game I think I would recognize the music just like I recognized music to all of those SNES games. I I love it! Edit: I agree with Eddwin that it was too short!
December 10, 200619 yr Whoah. This is awesome! It sounds like a mix between the Zelda music, Pirates of the Caribbean, Master and Commander, and a whole bunch of other professional stuff. WHY ARENT YOU PROFESIONAL YET??? This was completely amazing. The percussion sounds like something i did about a month ago. But alas it was too short. :P Keep up the good work! :P
December 10, 200619 yr .... *is isanely envious* :o That is fantastic Marius, kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. :D Man, I wish I had that type of sound quality to play around with! Sam
December 10, 200619 yr I've listened to a bunch of your stuff, Marius, and of course I've been impressed. But there's some things I think you need to sort of watch out for... This track has a couple of those things: A lot of times, you give the brass these close, low chords, and hold them. It creates a muddy, ambiguous sound that I think hurts the flow of the piece. It's almost like you misclicked in a couple of areas and have oddly dissonant chords as a result. I just don't really see how they fit in. Maybe you can hear what I mean? Also, your beats, although very fitting for whatever you are trying to convey, generally do not break out of a 4/4 or a 3/4 beat, and mostly the former. This is ok, but it is very common for other game music and pretty unoriginal. I think branching out, as far as rhythm is concerned, would do you a lot of good. Also, your beginnings, at least for your action-packed cues, like this one, tend to start out the same. There's some chord, maybe a melodic instrument introduced, then drums start in , an ostinato is played perhaps, and melody starts. It's another cliche I think you should try to break. You can be a lot more interesting than that, I'm sure! Your technique is superb, you know what you want, and how to get it. But I'm afraid you're lacking a bit in your own, unique style. Sure, your stuff sounds professional (no hyperbole here), but I'm positive it all could sound a bit more 'Marius'.
December 10, 200619 yr Author Thanks, everyone! Nick - I know that a lot of what I do tends to sound cliched but I don't always have a lot of freedom in terms of how I structure the pieces. This one for example needs the beginning to be like that because the game engine has one of those fade into battle video sequences and the music needs to reflect that. As for the bass chords though, I'll certainly take that into account and maybe fix it up a bit because I need to re-record this track anyways to make it loopable. Thanks for your suggestions! Nico - I've already fixed that up, thank you for the suggestion. RRR - I'm glad you noticed those harmonies, didn't think people would  Everyone who said it was too short - looping version coming up, so fear not! Thanks again everyone, updates should be up soon if I get a break from my homework.
December 11, 200619 yr Author Thanks! Yeah, I've had absolutely no formal composition training at all. I'm curious about your rating though; what brings my mark from a 9 to a 6.5? I'm curious what other themes you're comparing it to - I'm guessing it's still the melody that you're having issues with? The reason I ask is because a mark of 6.5 sort of conflicts with your first sentence..."wow, this sounds like it was made by a professional, if i just heard this without knowing that you composed it, i'd think that it was actually from a game." Thank you for the comment though!
December 11, 200619 yr Author Ah okay! The problem with boss themes is that they can't really be TOO memorable as such because they're supposed to just provide the sort of background motion necessary to make a boss battle tense. I find that the most difficult part of my job is often curtailing my original ideas into less overbearing versions so that they properly merge in with the game environment that they're written for. Anyways, your mark makes much more sense now, thanks for clarifying for me :P
December 30, 200619 yr Author Hey everyone! Another short and cute little thingy from this soundtrack - a cue for a group of bandits! On a bridge! :P Enjoy :D Bridge Bandits' Cue
December 30, 200619 yr Haha! Brilliant! I love the cartoony mischievous-like air you give it! Hats off, gentlemen, a genius! :P
December 30, 200619 yr I don't really have a lot to say.. it's good so far.. maybe a bit more from the brass section? Then possibly a huge bang (timpanis, etc.) and a large string part (as in Liberi Fatali).

Marius next time you post could you possibly post a low-fi link? My modem's crap. THanks..:P
