Trumpet Trombone Duo

Well, I suppose I'd better post this :D...

Anyway, I started this a few months ago, just to start writing for brass (meaning a lot of it is really difficult, and there aren't enough rests for breaths :)). It's in 5 movements, starting with a fast movement, a slow one, medium, slow, then fast. Kind of symmetrical, I suppose. Some of the pieces (or parts of them) I like, parts of others I don't, but they are what they are. I'll move on and write a brass trio now.

This piece was performed a couple of weeks ago so I'll get the mp3s of those up soon, but for now listen to the Finale mp3s. The performers only had a couple of days to practice, so the performance wasn't great (out of sync sometimes, mainly) but when they played correctly it sounded great.

I was going to go though movement by movement, but found I didn't have enough different comments to bother. So, these apply to most of these...

The trombone part is often quite low. Never too low, but low enough to require a lot of air. The pace of them is slow enough that breathing wont be a problem - there's never anywhere It appears they couldn't sneak a breath.

It appears to lay well on the horn - even the angular/chromatic stuff. Beware of the trill in m38 - how do you want this one done? It's in a bit of a rough spot in the range for a trill...

I can't say for sure about the playablity of the trumpet parts - looks fine, though the really angular bits might be tricky. Us brass instrument aren't as dexterous as woodwinds or strings. Still shouldn't be an issue though, with decent players.

(I'm assuming m29 in the last movement is an error? If not, multiphonics in thirds - especially minor thirds - are quite treacherous, and sound terrible close together)

You've got 5 very cool pieces here, though I can't say much about style or compositional strength here. They sound fun, and look more than playable. I look forward to hearing the recording!

First of all, yes, the minor third certainly is an error :). The top note is the one that should be played.

The trill was played as a lip trill, I believe, but I seem to remember my teacher saying the slide trill is possible. Either way would be fine, whichever is easier or more playable...

I'll try to get the recording of these up later this week....gotta break up a big aiff file into single tracks as mp3s :D.

That trill would be more comfortable with the F attachment trigger. Also, I would look at that and consider a flutter tongue, so be sure of what you want. I think the range is very playable for the piece, and even proves quite interesting in some places. I personally don't like playing too high too often, but my comfort range is in pedal tones. I will comment more later on.

Hard for trumpet, I play 1st trumpet in jazz band at school. For sure its hard for trombone. :evil:...SHORTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!! I like the ending. Although its an ending I would never hit in time with the trumpet.;)

Well, I am Portuguese by blood, but American by citizenship (my brother and I being the only ones born and raised in the U.S.). I assure you though, I am extremely proud of my Portuguese heritage and at least kind of know the language :w00t:.

yeah! very well! if i weren't brazilian i'd love to be portuguese! i am not of portuguese blood, but i thank God for being a native portuguese-speaker, this language is absolutely charming, musical, noble, versatile and expressive. E Viva Portugal! :D

I liked the piece a lot, as a trumpet player I can say that this would be quite fun to play.

All the movements are good, but there is just one litlle thing that bothers me: I feel that the runs in bar 23,24 and the final bar of mvnt 2 are too candid and do not fit in stylistically with the rest of the piece.
