Fact: This site has alot of video game fans.

Fact: Some of the music on this site is influenced by video games, whether you want to admit it or not.

Fact: We also have alot of non-video game influenced composers.

Fact: Video game fans like this site, and use it as a way to express themselves.

Opinion: Video game music and music of the arts should be separated (both are equal in value)

Solution: Use my sister site as a way to bring forth video gamers, or specialty composers.

Listen up:

We can use the new site as a way to distinguish between video game fans and non-video game fans. Of course, both groups would be able to transfer from one site to the next, if they want to participate. The difference is, the new site would be for composing projects, such as video game music, movies, etc. This site is strictly for the arts, music evaluation, advice, technique, competition, collaboration, etc and I think we all would agree on that. The new site would be strictly for project composing.

For example, World of Warcraft is extremely popular right now with 4 million players. I've played the game for about 3 months last January. I am no expert, but I think the game lacks musical variety. I'm thinking that if we get enough video game composers for a particular popular game, you guys could have fun writing concept music for particular places within the game. If we get big enough, I could even try to contact Blizzard, or whatever company, and tell them that we have a site of composers who are composing concept music for their particular game.

But, I am not going to do this if we don't have demand for this. I only want video gamers and movie composers to actually take the poll. Other members whose music is not influenced by video games, please neglect the poll, unless you are actually interested in video games yourself, or interested in taking that path. Anyone can chime in if they want to offer me their opinions or comments as well.

This idea sounds somewhat familiar... ;)

*ahem*

... :shifty: I think it's a brilliant idea and that we should definately go with it, there's nothing to lose. :P Can I run it?

This idea sounds somewhat familiar

What do you mean?

Can I run it?

Sure :shifty:

I am going to pick out the most experienced game music composers to head this site.

Keep in mind that I think it is more important to pick people who are reliable, active, and willing to lead. Being a good composer really shouldn't be a major deciding factor. But, yes, lets finish the poll and see if there is a demand for this before we get too far.

''This idea sounds somewhat familiar''

''What do you mean?''

What he means is that he had a post suggesting all this to you. I can't find it anymore though, it must have been deleted by accident. :P

''Can I run it?''

Whoa! Getting a little ahead of ourselves, are we?

Seeing as I know a lot of you guys, I am going to pick out the most experienced game music composers to head this site. I know that you are quite proficient at as a video game music composer and know a lot about game music, therefore there is a huge chance that you'll get in on the fun. :shifty:

Yes, of course. I would rather have someone with both qualities. But in the end, reliability is the deciding factor.

I am a video game fan, and yes sure I'll try anything once.

DEFINATELY! I like video games, and this sounds like a great idea!

How many votes are you aiming to get before a decision is made? Seems that the results are starting to look pretty clear. Are we waiting for a sizeable portion of our group to vote or can we just assume they agree based on the representation of the current results?

I support it, i believe I could learn a great deal from this.

Well...what's the verdict guys?

I'm a videogame fan, but I love videogame music even more: not the bulk of it, of course: most of it is just beeps and funny harmonies. The Mario soundtracks are always fun to listen to, but Final Fantasy and Zelda are the best of best: I still don't know which one makes a better soundtrack.

Listen to some of the music from World of Warcraft as well; it's very good.

Really? I'll try to. What's the gaming genre?

It's an MMORPG, I haven't had a chance to play too much of it but the music is awesome. I have parts of the soundtrack, if you want it you can contact me outside the forum (MSN) and I can send you some, it's good stuff.

I know this site called vg-music.com and they should have it: thanks for telling me about that.

PS: What the hell's an MMO?

Massively Multiplayer Online

Oh, online gaming... No wonder I never heard of it.

So...are we going to get a decision here or do we have to wait for the Easter Bunny on this one too  ?

Hello all. I am new to this site, but I found this topic very interesting. I myself am considering a career in Music composition, quite possibly for video games. I happen to also like to play video games, love the music Koji Kondo wrote for the mario stuff.

Has this sister site been launched? Is it still in the works?

Hey there, the sister site is in fact now up and running. Check us out! www.recordhall.com/forum

I am a video game fan but I sold my Xbox 360 to have more time for music.. :P gee whiz how crazy is that, someone on this site putting video games aside for music

I love video game music. It can be almost any style!! I'd love to write for video games.... oh yeah that'd be great.

The greatest video game music ever composed, in my opinion, can be found on Chrono Cross, a PSOne single-player RPG made by what was then Squaresoft. Yasunori Mitsuda did an absolutely marvellous job with a celtic feel, something lacking from most Final Fantasy soundtracks. He needs practice writing romance stuff, but the rest of it is really, really good.

Videogame music is awesome, when you are playing a videogame...

That's also a fact for movie soundtracks... (except masterpieces like the Star wars soundtrack <-- too KVLT (cult noobs! :) ) and the requiem for a dream's main theme or something)

Repeating simple melodies, most times it doesnot even makes sense unless you look at the action...

Not so catchy melodies etc... have you played Resident evil ? Do you remember the main theme ? None of you does... because the music isnot catchy in order to let the player focus on action and horror... (that's why only places with riddles had... something more than atonal music and sound effecs).

Actions like these are done in purpose.

And why should we see such a track next to a symphony ? I am not saying "ban videogame music".

But I am also against the "another site for videogame music" idea. Same way we should make another site for Rock music. Another site for Pop music, another site for Gothic Black and Death Metal, grindcore and gore metal heh

Why not add a forum dedicated to misc, compositions like VIDEO GAME MUSIC, and other genres away from the "classic" genre.

Wonderful idea mate, it's just too bad so many people on this forum are strictly closed-min-ermm, I mean...secure in their musical beliefs. This means that those of us who like the wonderful realm of videogame music are the underdogs.

Ah now THERE'S an idea. Man, I wish this would have worked the first time it was suggested. That's alright though, it's already too late. The sister forum dedicated to videogames it already up and starting to pick up speed.

Check it out Here and start helping the community grow; it'd be appreciated.

Stagy games are my favorit. IF it music then I will play it when I go to the pit of Doom. :D
