Looking For A Good Text
ChristianPerrotta posted a topic in Advice and TechniquesSo, I've been thinking a lot in writing a bigger work for choir, but I'm can't find a text that fulfills my expectations. Have you guys got any hint? It can be in "any" language or "any" theme, with some personal restrictions... in fact, I don't want to impose limits; if you have a good idea for a text, can you share it? Thanks
TJS posted a topic in Composers' HeadquartersAre there any contemporary/recent poets whose work you [would] like to set to music? Or newer branches of poetry that you like? I don't know much about what's out there in this regard but am curious of any discoveries people have made that may be particularly useful for musical purposes.
siwi posted a topic in Composers' HeadquartersI am currently working on a piece for choir and orchestra. As might be expected, this sets a text (three different poems to be precise). I am just curious as to what approach people take when setting a text to music, with regard to how this influences various elements in the composition. Do you, in general, subordinate the purely musical elements (melody, harmony, structure, use of motifs, etc) to the text - allowing its meaning, or its speech-rhythms, or other similar features, to dictate everything -, or do you prefer to write in an more 'abstract' way (i.e. giving priority to the purely musical features listed above) and fit the text around a more non-vocal conception of the work?
