Fullness with SATB Writing
Kvothe replied to BlackkBeethoven's topic in Incomplete Works; Writer's Block and Suggestions
As far I can see, there were not any counter point errors: parallel 8ths and 5ths. 🙂 I am concern with the bass movement, though. You mainly use root bass movement. Try using inversions with the harmonies. You will have more melodic bass live that way. Also @Henry Ng Tsz Kiu commented: what are you trying achieve? Let us know, Kvothe. - Today

I've had various issues with Musescore 4 too over the years, but they've updated it multiple times since last year around this time. Have you tried re-rendering it now with the new updates in place? Maybe it's no longer an issue? -

Intonent Hodie - 4 carols for choir
mercurypickles replied to mercurypickles's topic in Choral, Vocal
Hi! Yes the piano switch in the final number was due to rendering issues. For whatever reason the MIDI began cutting random bits of the music out despite all voices in the mixture showing activity - for this reason, I changed the instrument being used for that moment so the music remained intelligible. Thank you for taking a look at this piece despite it being posted so long ago! -
Hi! I’ve set myself an ambitious goal: to compose a symphony dedicated to my beloved late teacher. Even though I’m not from the music world at all and have no formal musical education, I decided that it’s going to be a large five-movement symphony, with massive outer movements and a choir in the finale. I’ve already started composing the first movement, but in the last few days I’ve felt that something is going wrong. I really want to hear an outside perspective to tell me whether my thinking is on the right track. It feels like I haven’t even finished the exposition yet, but the quality of the writing is already starting to drop and the form is falling apart. Starting around 4:37 I feel like I get carried away in the wrong direction, and maybe I should rewrite that part. I’d be very grateful if you could either dispel or confirm these worries.

Hi @kaiyunmusic I thoroughly enjoy how this resembles Scott Joplin piano works. I love to listen his works on relaxing day. Your piece reminds of him. The swung 8th in the right on top of lazy left hand. It just amazing all around.

Hi @Crescent Roulade Thank you sharing this charming piece around the holiday season. I can hear how it would fit with the mood of being Christmas piece. You have nailed that, for sure. However, there are some areas you probably need to adjust for later works. First, when you need to label you parts. That way, we can tell what the instruments are. This is easy fix. 🙂 Second, for the drum part, I am rather baffled why there are notes in octaves on a single line staff? Third, I am rather confused about the general form...all i hear is one motive throughout the piece. Again, these things to keep in mind. All of us here to learn from each other. I am sure in time you will too. 🙂 Kvothe.

And we are off, again. This time @J. Lee Graham brought us a fugue in 3 parts! Exposition: The subject ("we wish you a merry Christmas) is the tenor voice and does us. bring good cheer. He wrote this 3/8 instead the meter that song is written. You may ask why. That is to link to subject with the counter subject. We then hear the CS once the full theme is stated this signal the next voice to bring more good cheer. After each voice does this, we move onto the next part of the fugue where stretto could occur. Devolvement: Yes, there are stretto to be found. and fragments of the subject exchanging between each voice is to be discovered. Recap: Then we return to subject to fully round off the composition. Great job.

Really cool music!, I really enjoyed the more sporadic textures. Your slower section is always carrying interestingly forward, with two distinctive voices at any given times. Some very wonderful counter point here. I will say the "Alla Jazz" Section felt like you lost the complexity and interest you had been building up, rather than redirecting it. I'm not sure what more you could do, it is very interesting by itself, but I felt a little surprised. The transition back to craziness was very smooth and satisfying. -
Some Guy That writes Music started following 3 Leaves - 3 Movement work for Flute, Oboe, Cello
-
Hello Folks, this is a 3 movement work I recently finished in my first few weeks of composition lessons. The following three movements are about three leaves as they fall from a tree. For each leaf, a different character is met. These leaves begin in similar places, swaying in the wind, before falling into the world of their character. The first leaf falls and is found by a little kid. This kid plays with the leaf, more excited than any adult could understand. They fly, dance, and eventually sneak together into the house. The second leaf falls and is watched by an old man. The man does not interact with the leaf, but instead is reminded of the beauty and fragility of the world. He remembers his life through this lens. The third leaf falls and is spotted by an angry man, who wants to crush every leaf. The leaf realizes he is coming, and flies with the breeze to escape, before eventually failing.

i love how the dissonances compliment the rising motion of the polish chorale leading up to the "gloria," and how you variate the "in excelsis" in sequence going to a third and then to a PAC of "deo" the mashup between the two songs really works together and i loooove the ending: the high violins repeating the "gloria" section (actually, they just switch up place with the violas and cellos from bar. 10 onwards), the highest register of the piece being used only at the very end, the harmony stays still and doesn't show any harsh dissonance except the one on bar 18 cellos, going chromatically from B-flat, B, and C for the final cadence, and finally, the end chord, I over IV, is just a nice tie over the whole thing i let out a sigh great piece dude !!!

I'd say it's probably more of a "consistently used device for purely historical reasons", certainly a small detail not worth glossing over. Overall I like the fugue, and as you said, it's indeed fun. I'm a big fan of how you chose to retain the original harmonisation through your countersubject(s). The piece just wouldn't be the same without it! The counterpoint and motivic development are both very good. What I find lacking is the choice to include the extraneous 9th bar in the subject. At the risk of the fugue becoming a bit foursquare, I find its inclusion to be a little inelegant. In addition, the appearance of a rising chromatic scale in the subject harmonisation is something which I feel like should be explored more: the harmony in the episodes is too tame in comparison.

2025 Christmas Music Event!

Hey Chris I know your agitation, because it seems to you that we are doing nothing on the AI issue on the forum. But the truth is, we as staff are taking a lot of time to discuss the whole issue and the settling down of it, at one point even very fiercely. (I'm sure you don't want to know how we argue) It's a really big issue so we need to be 100% clear on how we should handle it, since it could have affected the whole future of YC forum. It is because we as composers all know how precious it is for us to use our time to compose, so we need to handle it very carefully so no one's works would be depreciated on the forum, and the positive culture can be maintained. So, can you give us a bit more time Chris? Henry -
@Kvothe ha well you probably could do a thesis on Romeo and Juliet.

This is my piece for the Christmas Music Event (+ my first time writing anything marching band-esque). There are some changes in the sheet music since Noteflight doesn't have celestas and I didn't really know what to do for the drum notes but aside from that, everything is as it should be. Have fun listening!

No problem. I felt like read so much that I could do thesis on sonata form. LOL. I wanted to thesis on Romeo-Juliet overture.
