Haha it's also just an instinct to start on form first, nothing smart in it. I just really love forms in the 1st place and luckily have some really good books on it in my school library so I can study on my own as early as possible. Maybe becoz of that, I suffer from "gee what comes next" syndrome more! I cannot just care whether the harmonic progressions work, but also how to make sense of each passages and their transitions! This is really smart. I instinctively am harmony first, but thats why its good practice to start with other facets of music for different pieces. Form first is great because most neglect it at first and it's the best cure for "gee what comes next"

Wow... Your voice is wonderful, I love the timbre and emotion in your singing. Don't be bashful about it! Do I think you should do more songs? Definitely :) Please keep writing and performing these, I had no idea I'd like your vocal music so much

But why covering basics would be annoying? 🤪 I myself, weirdly take form as my first approach to composing, but not harmony and counterpoint. Maybe that's why I have to write longer pieces instead of shorter ones now.

For people that already know my work,i have started a new catalogue, so you will now often see LOB instead of SanWV.LOB stands for Liber Operum Barrosianus, just a fancy way of putting a catalogue name. I hope you like the piece! ❤️

That's a valid view. It's annoying that harmony text cover basics. I think there should be re-working on how harmony, counterpoint, and form should be taught.

hi @Tunndy I can definitely hear the Satie influence with this piano piece. The simple harmonic vocabulary that alternates between measures with melancholy melody above it emulates his style. Not many know about his works, but his piano works are as charming as Beethoven's Bagettes. Simple, beautiful, and charming. When it comes playabity, Satie works were not technically hard. They were not Rachmaninov solo works. I feel that your piece would be comfortable for intermediate, young players. I can hear a clear melodic line that flows like a river. Great job! When it comes to taste: Satie harmonic lanague and thematic, like yours, is easier for the general audience. But for those who are more customed to different styles, they will be love it. (I did!) I can not wait too see more. Kvothe.

It's weird...an instant composition exercise, to see if I could write a little piece during a little party, with the distractions of beer and rock music playing. Took a bit of editing and still rough! https://www.noteflight.com/music/titles/89c27a42-c2bb-400d-a702-ec32d306df65/minuet-in-db-major

Hi guys! Hope you're all doing well. So, I wrote a poem two months back, and whilst I did, I also made a melody out of it just because lol. So, I thought it had the potential to become an art song, so I composed it. By the way, this song just contains the first stanza of my poem. Do you think I should make more songs for each stanza to do like a song cycle or something? Anyways, I sang this myself because I find vocal soundfonts to be... nauseating. Anyways, I am no singer, so try not to roast me too much for my voice lol. Do tell me how you like it, or if you have any suggestions.

Lazy Day Background Music

Hi @Kvothe Thank you for your kind comment! That is very interesting it reminds you of Scott Joplin. I can hear it a little now that you point it out. One of my favorite pieces to play is Maple Leaf Rag! -
As a composer, starting out, with a limited funding, I am anxious about this: who does the binding and how will my music be performed if cannot bind my own music? I always hear it is on me. I also hear it is librarian that does that. I also hear they accept PDF. I am so confused.

If you make a lot of changes and want to preserve the old version so that people (and you) will be able to see the progress that you've made then you might want to create a new topic. I have a few things that I want to tell you about this piece too! Like for example just this first phrase: I perceive the downbeat of the melody on the 1st eighth note, but you have it offset by an eighth rest meaning that all your downbeats are on the off-beat. Also, 8/4 is an uncommon meter and I hear this piece as being in 4/4 but with all note durations halved like so: It's a charming and simple piece though! Thanks for sharing!

This is my first attempt (excluding some best-forgotten teenage stuff) at writing a concerto. The style is my own blend of Classical and some early Romanticism and perhaps a dash of Baroque, but I wrote for the modern valve trumpet. Admittedly, the tessitura may be a bit high, frequently going up to the 8th and occasionally the 9th harmonic. Any comments or feedback would be most appreciated!

Hey @BlackkBeethoven! I was thinking of some alternate explanations for why you might perceive your music as not sounding "full". Quality of your sound samples - If you're using low quality samples or general midi or Musescore Basic Soundfonts this might be the cause of your dissatisfaction rather than anything about the quality of the harmonies or how full the textures you're using are. Lack of reverb or realistic room effects - If your renderings are very dry and without any realistic reverberation to let the instruments really resonate then that might be another thing that might be causing your poor impression. Avoidance of Dissonant Intervals - Choral harmony uses lots of beautiful rubs or dissonant passing tones or suspensions and if you haven't learned how to incorporate some of these dissonant voicings your SATB arrangements might sound bland to you. These are just some ideas off the top of my head for why you might experience your music as not sounding "full". I hope some of this was helpful!

Fullness with SATB Writing
Kvothe replied to BlackkBeethoven's topic in Incomplete Works; Writer's Block and Suggestions
As far I can see, there were not any counter point errors: parallel 8ths and 5ths. 🙂 I am concern with the bass movement, though. You mainly use root bass movement. Try using inversions with the harmonies. You will have more melodic bass live that way. Also @Henry Ng Tsz Kiu commented: what are you trying achieve? Let us know, Kvothe.
