  1. Hello composers! First of all, sorry for my bad English :) I am a Hungarian young composer, and contemporary music performer (cello/piano). I made several competitions for you, to write a pieces for me/us, and I/we perform the winner piece. Now it's not a competition, it's a continous connection between you and us, so that's why I made the topic here. I hope you will like my idea. So here it is: There is an ensemble called Cluster Music Factory. Actually, it's not a real ensemble, because we don't play all together on concerts, but we work on many pieces in different parts, and if something gets ready, we perform it - that is the reason of our name. :) We played Philip Glass' String Quartet, Steve Reich's Different Trains, some works from some of you, Ornstein's Cello Sonata, John Adams' Hallelujah Junction, Ligeti, Penderecki, Lutosławski, etc... We are not professional musicians but we try to make our things in a very high level, and we are interested only in XX. century and contemporary music. I am the main organizer of this thing, and I am the music director too, as I have the most experience in contemporary art. We started to make a Concert Series of Contemporary Music this year. Till 2013 summer, I would like to make 4-6 concerts. On each concert, we would like to play 3-4 shorter, or 1-2 longer chamber pieces from amateur young composers. Of course, we don't have time to perform everything, so for the first time everybody can suggest max. 2 pieces, choose wisely! Very important: we would like to make concerts with solo, or smaller chamber pieces, so the maximum number of performers is 5! The duration of the piece can be max. 20 minutes. (We have to give time for other pieces too :). And now, the available instruments: Soprano voice (0-1x), flute (3x), clarinet (0-1x), violin (3x), viola (0-2x), violoncello (2x), piano (2x), trumpet (0-1x), horn (0-1x). We have other instruments too, but they are so busy nowadays. Maybe in a few month, they can do things too, I will wrote about that later. Where I wrote 0, it's a bit harder to organize, beause of their timetable. So the main instruments are flute(s), violin(s), violoncello(s), piano(s). Mainly I play the cello and the piano pieces, but my piano knowledge is limited. Please check my youtube profile, I play piano there, if your piece is not much harder than those, I can perform it easily: http://www.youtube.com/user/Gollam12?feature=mhee . Of course with enough practice, everything is possible :) The style is free, we can accept tonal, and atonal works too. But if you ask me, I vote for atonal works :) And one last, but very important thing: we really like to make world premiers :) So unperformed pieces have advantage. If we dicide, that on the next concert, we perform your piece, we start to discuss things with you. Of course we are in Hungary and it's not possible for us to go to an other country, so we make it online. I will always try to manage the video recording of the concert, it has around 95% chance. But if I'm not successful, we can make a normal recording too, but not in a studio, that's very expensive here in Hungary... So, if you're interested, please write a comment here with your ideas and pieces. If you have something to send, please send it to my e-mail address: gollam12@gmail.com So that's all! Go for it! :) For those, who wrote entries for my solo cello / cello+electronics competition: I didn't forget your works :) For those, who I said, that their piece will be performed by we, will be. In December/January, I will make a contemporary solo cello or cello+piano concert, I will write a mail about it in around November. Take care! Marcell Magyari Cluster Music Factory

  2. Thanks Ad Hoc, I appreciate the support. That idea really pushed me to the completion of my song. However, I will try to make note, that the next time I enter a contest, I will work harder to build into the rules.

  3. I'm glad you kept going with it. Sometimes it's better to ignore the rules and not hamper creativity. Especially if you care more about the end product and less about winning a contest.

  4. Hey guys. THANK YOU so much for the feedback on my piece. Sadly, I am aware, and have been, that my piece doesn't fit into a "Theme and Variations" contest very well, and I understood the penalties I would face, score wise, because of it. But, I was DYING to do some writing and soon after I started, it transformed into something very different from a Theme and Variation, so I went with it, and couldn't say no to submitting my work. My goal was to, at least, have you, the listener, enjoy what they were hearing. I hope I did an ok job. About my score, I am very sorry it was of poor quality. I usually write a scratch score dealing with the music on a note to note basis (What you guys were looking at) and finish my ideas up by adding dynamics, instruments, and adjustments later in a separate program. It kinda makes things worse when you throw in that I couldn't even figure out how to get a score until the week before submission. So you might be able to see how it ended up so pathetic. Haha. Sorry again, the score really wasn't given much time. That, and I had no way to differentiate sounds between things like the "String Pluck" and the bowed strings, so I did what I had to, to create to sounds I needed. Using different tracks was the only way to do it on the program I use for writing, and I didn't condsider it THAT big of a deal at the time. Hell, I got the sound I wanted. Also, Ad Hoc, you were dead on when you described it as being a song loosely built off of a theme. I am glad that you derived that from the mess I presented. The rules kind of became second after I started writing and, at that point, I just wanted to create the best possible tune I could based off of that wonderful theme, I think of it as a tribute, so I accept my scores graciously.

  5. I don't know about previous versions, but Finale 2010 has this edit you can try. Document > Data Check > File Maintenance. Check the box (at minimum), "Remove deleted items". This MIGHT help. As to why a deleted item wouldn't be deleted when you delete it... you'll have to ask the brilliant programmers at MakeMusic about that one. Also, if anyone knows about fixing this other bug, I could use help with that as well: Though mine is a bit different of a problem. Let's say you have a grand staff with a piano, no matter what I do, if I put a different dynamic on the treble than on the bass, it ignores the quieter dynamic. Also... Care to tell us where we can find an orchestra to perform our scores for free? Individual instruments that are decent are expensive enough as it is, not to mention that I cannot try to learn all brass and woodwinds on top of knowing how to play harp, guitar, bass, viola, violin, cello and concerto bass.

  6. Hi, Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro for iPad will soon be available at the iTunes App Store. We are looking for teachers and musicians interested in reviewing the app and give us some feedback (we only get 50 redeems codes for this purpose). http://mdecks.com/mapharmony.html Here are three tutorials so you can see how the app works. Tutorial I Tutorial II Tutorial III It is going to be part of a seven workbook collection. The volumes in the Mapping Tonal Harmony collection have been envisioned as auxiliary material in the study of Tonal Harmony. The main objective of these books is to provide the student, teachers, composers and/or songwriters with a tool that will aid them in hearing, analyzing, foreseeing and composing harmonic progressions without struggle, in all keys alike. Since I know all you guys are interested in topics like this, I thought was a good idea to share this new concept and see what you might think. If you'd like to be part of the reviewer's list please let us know. Thanks.

  7. Thats interesting tool. Definitely will be useful in harmony lessons or just exploring possibilities. Im also hypnotized by all the circles and arrows - like the design.
