August 18, 200718 yr Every time I go inside the chatroom there's either one person or none. Seeing as everybody seems to use the shoutbox instead of the chatroom, is there really a point to it? I know that there used to be organized chat times, but I don't even think that's really effective.
August 18, 200718 yr The chat is pretty inactive as is, yeah, and we've been discussing how to get people in there. Perhaps it's just not visible enough, perhaps ''chat'' needs to be formatted in big, bold and red letters. :) (staff inside joke :)) Uh, yes, so how should we go about increasing activity to the chat? Closing down the shoutbox at certain hours has been suggested.. I personally think that's a bit drastic...
August 18, 200718 yr The reason why it is so empty is basically because we have a shoutbox; easy and smooth to handle without any extra clicking. Another thing is, why enter when you will be in the room alone.
August 19, 200718 yr Author Yeah. I think everybody that _does_ want to chat on an interface like that uses MSN/AIM to talk to each other. Otherwise, they just use the shoutbox. The chatroom is obsolete.
August 20, 200718 yr I don't think we should remove it. We're a small site so it's hard to always have someone in there. Here's my suggestion: every time you log on to YC, open up the chat in a seperate tab, and keep it open. I'm going to do this - I'm in the chatroom now.

The problem when using the Chatroom is that I have this horrendous delay, I type something and then it takes about a minute before i see it get typed and another few seconds before it gets sent. ANNOYING!
August 21, 200718 yr ... maybe people would be more willing to keep it up all the time if it were IRC and not a laggy Flash-based chat? <<; (Assuming they're not unwilling to download an IRC client.) *prepares to get yelled at again*
August 21, 200718 yr I just often accidentally close the window because I'm spazzy like that :shifty: As for downloading and IRC client, If I didn't already have one for other reasons, I'd be against it because I hate having to download software to do random things like that. Also, I use a wide range of different computers- most of which don't belong to me- and I'm not always allowed to download any kind of chat program (the policy where I sometimes work) whereas downloading the latest Flash plugin is almost always allowed.
August 21, 200718 yr Many sites offer Java-based clients too for those who don't have an IRC client. Oh, is that what just happened? <<;
August 21, 200718 yr We had Java Chat. It lagged like crazy :shifty: At least for me. Even though I know that's not what you're referring to.
August 21, 200718 yr This laggs so much that even mr. Lagg who owns Lagg Inc. would find this laggy :horrified:
August 22, 200718 yr It works fine for me...in fact, I was in it this afternoon, but it is too low down on the main page.
