Wind Ensemble No.1

Featured Replies

I don't really have a writer's block, but I thought that I could have a piece that I am working on posted here. So basically you guys can see the entire process of this piece.

I am not very good at structuring my ideas since I so annoyingly spontaneous, but I have got a bone structure. I almost always start in the higher register, so this time I wanted to do the opposite. I wanted to start low and then it will move slowly up towards the higher register while the motives variate and change, I know I have not really succeeded, maybe I should delete and start a new one.

I am not very good at keeping my older motives since I tend to build a new one out of them, and example is the two last measures where Clarinet II is playing, it is something completely new but I have developed it from something else, I guess no one understood a crap :whistling:

Anyway here it is.

**EDIT**

Almost forgot, the feeling that I want to create in this piece in the first part is sadness/sorrow, something of a burden. It will progress and have some more 'violent' parts which resemble the intense and dramatic quarrels between me and my father, I was wondering if I should end it with a happy/glad feeling or change it to a more mysterious one, since I myself don't know if I will ever get along with my parents.

This is quite short at this point to comment on much. Although I think you have conveyed a feeling of melancholy already just in the this opening.

On a personal note, why dwell on the negative aspects of a relationship? Try to focus on the positive things and just remain true to yourself in what you do, and in what you focus on as your goals. Seeking acknowledgement or approval of dreams that have yet to unfold is only as paramount as you choose to make it. You obviously have a computer and are able to compose music. Why not write music that conveys the emotions of where you’d like to be in life, rather than dwelling on the negative situation which you, yourself, appear to have deemed to be impossible to resolve?

Look down and you will fall. Look up toward the summit of where you’d like to be and strive to reach that place. If you do that, you will someday find yourself at the apex looking down on the valleys of life that you have conquered.

nice, Matt. I particularly like the way your enbricked the clarinet between the bassoons, and then again the english horn between the clarinets (well, the bass clarinet and the others).

... if you don't like it - I can't help you there sorry.

I didn't say I didn't like it. On the contrary I think you portrayed a feeling of sadness very well.

I was just trying to spread a little optimism around and it went over like a lead balloon.

Sorry about that.

No no, I think you imagined my words a bit too harsh. I do appreciate your comment, but I like to start of in a sad tone because that is the feeling I can metamorph best.

I tend to focus on the more macrocosmic aspects of a work, and this work is too short to really do that. That said, I think that when it's extended, it will be a nice piece, as your start sounds pretty good. I'd like to see where this piece ends up.

This really is pretty short, but it's a work in progress so I can't blame you. Anyway, it held my interest for the entire 20 something seconds it played. This sounds trivial but I've heard some pieces that have held my interest about half as long. So anyway, good job. I look forward to hearing more.

Do not judge the beginning to much guys, I just posted it so that I won't forget it when I come back home in four days time. This IS JUST THE BEGINNING. I have explained how I want it formed.

Sorry to say, but it feels as if not too many have read why structural part, and I how has not much structural thinking spent like 30 min to think of it!

And thank you for showing interest

This IS JUST THE BEGINNING.

Frightening.

First, is the score in concert pitch?

  • Author

Yes, I like to write in Concert Pitch, I will remember to change :(

Lovely so far.

Strangely enough, the message I got from this was hope, and not the despair that you were going for. It sounded happy, and pained at the same time to me.

By the way, it is woodwind choir. Wind Ensemble is the same as concert band and would have brass, percussion, and saxophones.

Okay, one thing stuck out to me when I listened to the midi, so I opened up the score and investigated who the perpetrator was. It is clarinet I in measure 5, beat 2. I really don't like that perfect fifth with oboe II. Try for a third, change the offending concert D up to an F. I think it sounds a little better.

Would be really cool if you used an alto flute somewhere down the road. I think it would be very fitting.

MusicMan, thank you very much for taking the short time to analyze the short fragment. Yes, I do agree, my idea was to change the piece's thickness by having first thirds then fifths, although maybe it didn't turn out that well; the clarinet if you can notice plays the motif when presented the first time.

All the same, I thank you very much :)

And about the Wind Ensemble, ok I'll change the name then.

I have no written a few more lines, but changed quiet a lot of the old material. Tyler [Oboehazzard] tipped me to let the instruments play in their lower and middle register, and that is what I did.

I am also considering adding horns, since I think I'll need to use them later, but are 4 horns enough? or is it too much?

Sounds really good. I enjoyed it. I think four horns is a good number to use. I always try to use four, despite the fact that Renee hates our band playing my compositions because we only have two horn players and I end up doubling. =].

Are you including any Brass or Percussion in this one?

  • Author

I have not really thought of anymore Brass at the moment, just considered the horns so far. As for Percussion, maybe. I have just written a few measures, if the piece will need Percussion or more Brass, apart from the horns; I will add them

Thank you.

I don't think you need to add the horns. There are woodwind choirs, and they usually don't have horn players. It's all up to use, of course. I don't think you should use any brass, let the woodwinds do their thing.

Oh, and I didn't like it at all when changed the notes down. I liked the original better, with the clarinets up there and all. I don't like the sound of the new one at all. It is too hectic in the middle register. I liked the original because it encompassed a wider range, like arms open wide in a warm, welcoming gesture.

Maybe you are correct MusicMan, but think like this. That this piece could be a larva and then slowly metamorph (widening the register) and then form into a butterfly (the climax). Although that would change my original structure.

BUT, the beggining would kinda discourage me if left like it is. The new one just doesn't appeal to me. If it was the first thing I heard, it might lose my attention quickly. It could morph in more ways then one, you realize. Not just register, but intensity.

I agree with MusicMan, the beginning is a bit dodgy.

But I do disagree where he says you don't nessecarily need horns.

Horns are always great to have. Even if you only put two, the timbre of the horn supplements woodwind sections even if the horn is only playing a long note. =].
