Alpine Overture

Since I haven't heard it since the first version, I have more to say.

Some parts of it sounded Kondo-ish, which, when it comes to me, is a free ticket for musical praise  very very fine job!

You know what you are right still. I'm just not sure what kind of tune I can really assign to the lower strings on this composition. Still, I've tried to make its present role a bit more interesting by not making it simply long notes all the time...

I'll have a good mull over it after my exams are finished (1 week left - yay!! :glare: )

Update! I got an e-mail from the director of a Brazillian orchestra who are interested in performing this piece :(

I just wanted to ask something about timps - how long does it take for a timpanist to change the pitch of one of the drums? Cos I think there are 5 notes which the timpani plays and it's probably not practical to have 5 timpanis. Would 10 seconds be enough to change pitch?

I suppose I could always change the notes.

Depends if the timps have pedals. If so, just a few seconds. The timpanist has to "guess" the new tuning by feel usually. If no pedals, then allow about 2-3 minutes per timp. I've seen players do it in less but play safe.

cheers.

I've seen them do it pretty damn quickly, probably with pedals though as you say.

In any case it's such a minor problem... they'll figure something out probably. Timps don't have to be perfectly in tune do they?

If they have pedals, then they'll also most likely have tuning markings. Which means it takes less than 5 seconds to change pitches and they'll be perfectly precise if you tune all the timpani before performance. Find out what kind of timpani they'll be working with

Hey man, that was really kick donkey. Did you use Sibelius to write this? Cuz I've never heard Sibelius sound so sweet before. :P

You mentioned that you didn't have a music department at your university, meaning you're not a music major? How long did it take you to learn to write like this?

Keep cranking out those tunes man, I'm really lovin it.

Beautiful Piece!!!

I can only say a few things but I will be back to say more.

I really like the fact that the piece shows a kind of maturity

in the writing but is very youthful and fun.

Again, I'll say more later.

I really enjoy this piece.

I know a little something about timpani.

If the timpanist is half-decent (like high-school level)

Changing pitches should be an effortless task. (Unless timpani have no pedals as previously stated.)

At the average tempo of the piece, I would say

a good timpanist could change the pitch of one drum

in an eighth note span.

If the orchestra has four or even three timpani the

pitch changes should be no problem. I'm surprised

they don't have five timpani. When I play, I almost

always use five drums (32",29",26",23",20" piccolo timpani.)

hey, it's been a while since I commented on the piece but I just wanted to congratulate you on the update. I would have peed myself if I got an email like that.

Awesome piece... and as I horn player I would love to play the horn part of your last version... It would be exhausting, but fun

Excellent piece! I liked the orientation of sounds.

Any plans for a continuence ? (a 2th movement perhaps?)

This piece has a really catchy theme... It sticks with ya.

Apart from the opening theme the most impressive thing was the way you were

able to create tension and build it nicely.

Some parts in it I think need an ajustment in their melodic movement.

So it dont sound overly arrpegiated and such.

But a Great work overall! :D

I like the midi better than the mp3. It just seems a lot more pleasant and positive as midi.

Really? Well soon there'll be another mp3 :) Just received an e-mail from Vantoil in Brazil - this piece is being performed next Tuesday :) I wish i could be there, but he said that he'd send me a recording :) I'm so excited!!! I've had a couple of performances before but never anything orchestral!

DUDE!!! You've got to post the Orchestra mp3 for me!!! This is like my favorite song here and I can't wait to hear a live recording!!!

  • Author

OK I will :) I'm still waiting for it, though. I expect to receive it during the weekend. If not, I'll try to be patient, but I really can't wait to get it :(:

I found the over-use of percussion to be a little tacky.

Ok, I cant resist commenting on this. To put it simply, this piece is superb. I LOVE it. :) lol. Everytime I'm feeling down I listen to this (ya, stupid i know, but it makes me feel better lol) So yes. The first time I listened to this, I cried at the big lound part and at the end. :P One thing, I really like all the percussion you had in the first version of this. I dunno what they are all thinking...... Oh and one thing, Im not really sure if it was just the MIDI on this (usually i listen to the SIB file, but Sibelius was being dumb) but at the big part towards the end, I couldnt here the wierd offbeat things that the snare was doing. If yout ook those out, I think you should put them back in because they sorta keep everyhting moving forward.

Well, enjoy the rest of your day! :)

No, not yet :P The guy e-mailed and said they're going to play it at a few concerts and he'll send me the recording which turns out best.

It's very hard to be patient, as you can imagine!! But I'm trying my best.
