Pie Jesu

EDIT:

Kontakt Player realisation

There you go, a good-ish realisation by Kontakt Player =D

Another piece I composed quite recently. It's supposed to be very minimal. Without much movement and all. But I am quite sure the performers are going to murder me for giving them almost nothing to play...

PDF can be downloaded here

For those who has scorch:

Steven Tanoto

The file can be found there (Pie Jesu), under other music.

Hope you guys enjoy it...

P.S.: Check these ones out

There, this is the new one

The horrible midi.

And this is the score.

They are the latest version.

Regardless of how nifty that site is I'd love not to have to install any new ActiveX whatevers to view your piece - a pdf and a midi/mp3 is the standard fare around here, so that everyone can view your work.

So...I'd suggest doing that. If nothing else than for you, so more people can access it/review it.

You are right, I haven't thought of that. I uploaded the file elsewhere since my attachment limit is a goner. Thanks! =D

I like this piece; you've managed to produce some very nice harmonies, while not leaving the key.

The only thing I should mention is the D flat on page 3 and 4 (Harp part), which is really C sharp, because it belongs to the relative (d) minor. Moreover you have C in the soprano part at the same time, so you are composing in two different keys simultaneously: the C belongs to F major and the C sharp (D flat in your score) belongs to D minor. This little issue completly ruins your previously built harmonic system.

Anyway, it's a very good piece, just go on!

PS. Listening to the midi the Harp sounds like the choir, possible it shares the same midi-channel with the sopranos/altos.

This is a nice piece. Some great harmonies and I like the arch you've created a really nice journey. Congrats.

Aww thanks guys. I agree with your comment on the Dflat, I think I put there coz it sits right in the middle of the low G and A lol... D as in the fifth of G and A the fifth of D... I'll fix that though.

Beautiful piece. It captures the text very nicely, and creates very nice colors. Very nice orchestration. A word of advice-- you should notate those repetitive quarter note rhythms in the strings as tremolos, for ease of reading.

I really like this piece. I like the sudden explosion of harmony you have 2:25 that's my favorite part. I didn't get bored while listening which is amazing, because repetition usually puts me to sleep. It was your lush harmonies that grabbed my attention. Great Job!

Yay thanks a lot Muzic.

I showed that version to my teacher and he started telling me how I should use the orchestra more and orchestrate it more.

And I did. It got transformed quite a bit. The only problem now is that the midi sound even more horrible because I've got like 25 tracks going on at one time.

I'm going to upload the pdf and midi sometime soon.

lol I cant wait to hear it!

Good imagination indeed. That was what I worked with at first. I was just improvising on the piano. So the music really got finished in a day. But the orchestration took a while..

  • Author

There, this is the new one

The midi is really horrible btw.

And this is the score.

I might be able to get this played/sung, I hope..... Wish me all the best in convincing my teacher.

Just a note about your trombones. They are often too high when it's too quiet like at A. And that trombone cup mute solo at 107 would be much better served in the trumpet because it's impractical that high with a mute. Not impossible, but unnecessary since a very similar sound can be had with the trumpet.

And we all hate tenor clef unless there 34,985 ledger lines.

  • Author

Ah thanks! I was sorta looking for these kind of practical comemnts!

How about just trombone solo without mute at all... Coz my friend played it on his tenor (without mute) and it sounded brilliant!

And I'll change it to the bass clef =P

Without a mute it certainly brings the ease up. You have to balance the need for trombone or mute. If it's the muted sound you want, then put it in the trumpet. If you want a full trombone timbre, then leave out the mute.

  • Author

Yeah, I think i wasn't really sure about muting it too. Since what it does is changing the timbre, not the dynamics.

But yeah, I'll leave it as senza sordini! Thanks.

And I've re-placed some chords. Sparse chords are better sounded soft right? or closed ones?

like low F - C - A spaced apart, rather than F-A-C close to each other?

The thing is, the simplicity of it fits the theme very well!

It's just so innocent and beautiful and the voice entrance was pretty well done!

Ok, your orchestration was ok, considering that there wasn't much movement... just chord voicing lol. I do think that a little of the string writing could overpower the voices though... it depends on how much you use.

When ALL the voices come in, it's like a floodgate opening of some much needed bass. I could really see this as the 4th movement of a symphony Mahler Style. However, the chimes and pizzicato did get a little tiring after some time. The climax halfway through the piece was very well placed and executed, so kudos to you for that. The harmonies in these sections worked very well to keep my interest.

At about 3/4 of the way, though, I did start to lose a little interest in the piece. Maybe a section of really really fast and thick counterpoint would help a lot.

Good work! and a very great listen!

This is beautiful. One of my favorite pieces on here, as a matter of fact.

I love the orchestration, and the piece is very dramatic and well executed. You got a LOT out of a little, and the overall sound reminded me a little of P

Wow you have made it more amazing!!! You have to post the performance of this if you get one. Really good job!!

  • Author

Oh thanks a lot for the comments guys! I appreciate all your time and efforts to listen to this long piece!

Yeah, that's right about the orchestration. It's just chords. The strings, however, in the beginning is one with the harp. It's trailing off the harp as an echo or sustain (that's why it says pianisissimo, sotto voce and sul ponticello). I had it empty, only harp, at first, but me teacher told me that it would be rather small for that. I did not think so, but he thought so, so I changed it, which result in quite a cool effect thing I think, if it works.. lol

Yeah, the triplet triad motif (which gets annoiyng) is actually the main thing of the piece... I do get quite annoyed with it too...

I'm too sleepy, I'll write more tomorrow morning...

This is flat-out the most beautiful thing that has graced my ears on this website.

When I listened to the first MIDI, when the orchestra came in, I was stunned. When I listened to the second, the whole time I wanted to cry. This is absolutely gorgeous.

The only thing I would have changed was the ending. After such a massive experience, I think the best ending would be a quiet, low, peaceful one. I really hope this gets performed if it hasn't yet.

Seriously, just holy cow.

  • Author

Aw, thanks, that is such a compliment!

I think I've changed quite a few things from the original one I posted there. Anyway, I reuploaded a goodish Kontakt player recording of it. Listen to it if you have the time to.

I'll have to re-think about the ending, you're right about that too.. Haha, that might be the wrong thing in this piece that I had been feeling... Hmm..

Thanks again!

:( It's such a shame to hear such a beautiful piece through MIDI! I really loved it! Especially the woodwind writing and the entrance of the voices! It kept my interest throughout the whole piece and the harmonies were beautifully employed!

Job excellently done!

Thanks wayne! I'm glad you liked it.

I like this style, sounds like film music too. Is this completely diatonic? Diatonic and in F Major, just like my piece. :D
