Folk Song for Flute Quartet

Featured Replies

The most influential music in my life comes from the traditional Bulgarian folk music choral ensembles of Bulgaria. This flute quartet is inspired by a certain dance and chant they sing. If you've never heard or looked into this kind of music, you should most definitely give you a chance.

Writing this piece was definitely a type of catharsis for me. I'm not a big "let's talk about feelings" kind of person; I prefer to channel my thoughts through what I love most: music. I may not be the greatest composer in the world, but I sure love trying.

Listen with an open mind, and leave feedback if you'd like. I would love for anyone to take the time to give an in-depth critique if they'd like. I sincerely appreciate any and all feedback and constructive criticism. Who doesn't love to improve!?

More movements to come.

Thanks :D

Very pretty! This seems very minimalistic, and in a good way (as usual :P) I would like to comment that it doesn't change very often and could turn off some people (though I wasn't lol) So, that's all I can say for now! I can't wait to hear more movements, keep writing!!!

Good! Very Good!

I liked the way the first theme returned. With very few notes you create an nice aba-structure.

I think you a good understanding of the flute, double the lower notes. Play with unison or melodies in octaves. All very good. Sorry I haven't something more constructive to say. It was just fine :D

Some beautiful harmonic progressions, especially around mm 30-40 and during the slower section.

Can't wait to hear more. I liked it a lot. I wish I could hear it being performed live, I can imagine the colors. Thank you!

Oh my goodness; this is lovely! I liked this a lot; your quasi-minimalistic stacking of melodies leaves a wonderful effect. Also, you showed that you have a good understanding of flute writing; low register, upper register, etc. One day, I would like to perform this!

Although, I have to say something constructive...your score needs a bit of cleanup. I suggest you perhaps ask charliep123 for help with this (if he's got the time!). I'd help you out but I'm still working on learning to be neat myself. ><

Otherwise, great job. Looking forward to hearing more!

PS. You may want to consider entering this into a competition: areonflutes

I honorable mention'd this last year, but I'm not doing it this year...anyway, I think this piece would do well in this competition. :]

YESS, submit it to Areon! Naow. Well, I mean once you clean it and whatever you need to do. I really don't have anything to say that I haven't already said - I love this piece. There's something about layering this melody like you did that's really effective. Also, your mp3 recording is nice. Almost sounds live to me... excerpt where the vibrato lines up between the parts in the sustained notes. :pinch:

Thanks everyone :D

I'll definitely have to add some more movements before I think about submitting it to Areon...but that sounds like a fun goal!

it look like a cool music

good job

Collin

Very nice!!

I listened to this a few times and enoyed it more with each listen.

As JR said, double the low notes or they might not be heard.

Well done

Ron

I liked the fuga feeling it has in the a section, with the same rhythm, more or less overlapping each other very smoothly. I'll give a more detailed comment on it when I look at the sheet thoroughly :) For now from listening to it, I like it, the only constructive I can say is, it would benefit from a bigger change in melody interval-wise, it seems that it's the same melody just starting on different notes throughout the piece. But I don't know for sure :P

Wonderful job! I am not sure if you want a compositional viewpoint or this piece of what the final product sounds like. The composition itself surely shows promise!

Keep on keeping on!
