Oh sup I just found this thread.

Erm, I'm Fingernail, otherwise known as David Massey. I play the guitar. I compose some stuff, very little completed. I like Mahler and Gershwin and Radiohead and stuff. Also Dowland, and Bach. Very little experience/liking of Mozart or Haydn since there is no serious guitar repertoire from that period.

My style is kindof modern but I have a real soft spot for functional harmony, and base a lot of stuff on a sort of post-romantic perception... although I also love totally chromatic chords.

Anyway, my website is www.speaking-guitar.com if anyone's interested.

I'm working on a new guitar concerto!

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, you're David Massey?!?! Wow!!!

I watched your performance on Young Musician of the Year, you were excellent! Very well played.

Ha...wow. Very nice to have you here, David!

David Massey . . . that name sounds familiar. Why? Is it a famous person like a celebrity. Someone please tell more about this person in the light of what he has done in the public eye.

Hi all.

My name is Kade Ladelski.

I am a 13 year old composer trying to learn how to compose and sharing my music with others so that it might be critiqued and chastized  .

I grew up listening to Leonard Bernstein and I feel that a lot of my music tends to come from his influence. But of course I never actually try to compete or copy him.

I use my own style complemented by the effect he has had on me as a child.

I hope I can learn alot here.

I'm a new member!

Good for you! I hope you can help us with your comments.

But tell me: how many instruments do you play and how many years have you been playing/composing?

Hey everybody... I am Christianna Joy Baker (known as Shanna). I am 15 years old and I play the piano, violin, Saxophone (Alto and Tenor), Clarinet, and I sing (soprano). Some of my favorite composers are Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, etc. Hope to get to know ya'll better.

Shanna :D

Hi, I'm Evangelyn Baker and I am a new member. I'm not a composer but I really love it. I would like to be one but I really don't have the time and the talent. I do play 4 instruments though. I play the clarinet, piano, violin, and the saxophone. So far I've played the clarinet for 3 years. I can play by ear almost more than I can out of a book or something. I've played the piano for 4 years and I still am not good at that. I don't really enjoy playing the piano but I love to listen to other people play. I just got a violin a few months ago. I don't take lessons but I taught myself. The saxophone I can play some things but I really don't like the saxophone. I really hope to play a flute.

About me: I live in Cridersville, Ohio which is near Lima or Wapakoneta. I was born In Joliet, Illinois. I am 12 turning 13 on June 16th. I'm in 7th grade and homeschooled on the internet. Sometime when I grow up I want to be in an orchestra and hopefully play the flute or violin in it. I'm definitly going to do something that has to do with music. I don't think I could compose music though. I don't have the brains. You guys are really good. Well... all I've heard so far is some of Chopin's music because that's all I can hear on my computer but just reading the comments and stuff it sounds really good! Keep up the good work! :D

Hello, just found this forum and it seems nice. I am interested in composing songs and music theory and this is the first website I've found that is dedicated to that, with a helpful friendly atmosphere. Kudos to a well done site. :(

The music I've been making is extremely amaturish compared to the average level I've seen around here, but I am learning, improving and having fun.

Anyways, my main interest in writing music started with an interest in drums. Specifically polyrhythms, so I downloaded a freeware midi program and started playing around with strange off kilter beats. Then I set my ears to making simple melodys, and really really really horrendously terrible songs. Then I started to read up on music theory, why scales work... how chords work. Specifically I wanted to know the reasoning for making a Piano with black and white keys. So I slowly taught myself music theory, and added proper chords and kept making more terrible songs.

But the thing was, the songs started to sound less terrible. And so I worked on it some more, and it really was quite fun.

Well now I am interested in learning more and more about composition and just general ideas about making a "good" song. Which led me to this site. So I am sure I'll learn from the professional people here.

Through all this learning I never learned how to play an instrument. I just go back to the old trusty piano roll notation to make my own "music" whenever I try to play anything. Any other composers around here like that?

:( Hello everyone i am a new member

Write something! It'll improve all of your musical skillz!

It is summer and now that I actually have some time to breathe I figured I would visit the forum to see how everyone is doing.

It strikes me that I am really, really bad at sticking to any single online community for any length of time. That's especially a shame in the case of YC, because this board is full of so many people who love music and who have a lot of great ideas to share.

Now I'm not making any promises, because lord knows there are enough real-life distractions out there, but I really want actually become a part of this community by sharing my music and offering advice and critique on the music of others with some consistency. And that is precisely what I intend to do, using the time I have this summer. I guess in reality this post is pretty pointless, but I figured I ought to at least post something somewhere before diving back into the fray.

Hello! I'm Iwenn from Singapore. I'm 25 and probably kind of old for YC.. >_<

I started my likings for song writing since I was in elementary school but I didn't get anywhere serious because it was a social stigma that song writing would bring me nowhere. Nevertheless, music was compulsory in school though I was only taught basic theory and the recorder. Somehow, I wasn't too affiliated with learning music.

In my teens, I started writing songs, hoping to move towards commercial song writing, but my greatest passion was really in writing lyrics. But the lyrists market in my region is dominated elsewhere and lyrics will only stand a chance if coupled with melody. So, I tried composing, but only with vocal because I don't really know how to play an instrument.

The turn really came along with having an Internet access. I learned more information about composing and the industry and was better at gauging what is realistic. It was really participating in competitions that brought me further because they required complete song, and that was when I added guitar accompaniment and later, arrangements with midi.

Now my intention is to go to music school to fix my problems - instruments, theories and arrangements. They make me sound fantastic to the novice but absolutely foolish to the professionals and I don't think I'll get anywhere without fixing them ;) All for the sake of writing lyrics

This is the first composing forum that I've joined and I hope I'll enjoy my stay here ;)

Actually, you'll probably be quite at home here, Iwenn. There are lots of members on this site who are aged 20 or over - in fact, the majority of our moderators are aged 20 or over. I hope YC can help you with all of your aspirations!
