A brand? I don't think so... it's really just a town in the middle of nowhere. (If you look at a map of England you'll see a lump to the east that looks like a tumour- that's Lowestoft

The Darkness came from here- not that that's anything to be proud of :)

Folk music? Have you ever looked at American Bluegrass... There is a serious lack of it as an inspiration in composer's works... Except for maybe Edgar Meyer... Anyways... Welcome.. Stay away from Nico.

I love Bluegrass (can't listen to it much, though, as no-one else in my family does ;) ) But I can't compose in it (I'm useless at songs- maybe you can give me some tips?) - I meant more Irish and Scottish Folk music. :)

My music teacher told me guys were more "composery" (sic) But I didn't believe him... until now :P

Heh, in the last forum I was in there was someone who said "Stay away from _______" in EVERY thread for 2 1/2 years :D

Proove that you're a girl...

Regardless, welcome.. :P Stay away from me, Hillary, Nico, Tomas, RRR, Saiming.. etc. :D

I believe her, I'm desperate for female companions :P

*glares at any male who attampts to go near her*

**points at Avatar** 'tis me and a lot of photoshop...

Maybe it would be quicker to tell me who I can actually go near? ;) :)

Go easy with the glaring, I'm trying to convince my boyfriend to join up. :D He's a much better composer than I am.

I've just come from a female-heavy board (4500 members, about 40 were guys) so this'll be a change ;)

*stops glaring*

Then you'll be part of the boards second real-life couple :D

My boyfriend is the member Marius (and I'm a girl... if you didn't know).

A female heavy board you say? I didn't even believe those existed! ;) :P

Yeah, it's a really great site. It was started by the author Tamora Pierce and is basically for people who like Fantasy Novels, or just reading, or Political Debates, or general discussion, or films, or music, or...etc...... it gets silly at times, but there are always serious conversations coupled with fun stuff It's not strictly for girls, but as Pierce writes books with young women as the leads, boys tend not to find it.

I left because I talked too much- I was the second busiest poster on the board, until I realised that I had nothing new to say- I'd been on it for four years and seen all the conversations and opinions before. But I'd still totally recommend it :)

Welcome to Sheroes! -----There it is. ;)

Finally, another Modernite.... What college do you plan on going to?

Hopefully the University of Iowa, if everything works out right.

I don't know if anyone wades through however-many pages to find scared little newbies, but Hi! if you're there :P

I'm Viv (Sivvus) and I'm 17 from Lowestoft in the UK. ...I tend to veer towards jazz or folk, as most of the instruments I play fall into those catagories.

I lived a year in Manchester (not tooooo far from Lowestoft?), and loved the UK - so expensive though, we were working full time, left no room for music.

Glad to have you on board - I can always use a more jazz support around here.

lowestoft, i seem to remember that knob gene simmons doing something there.

Anyway, welcome, nice to see some more brits around

Hi, I'm Michalis (called myself Bob in a fit of random stupidity)

I am new to composing but really want to learn. I love all kinds of music but have only just started exploring classical music properly. Could anyone suggest some good works that a complete beginner would like?

Thanks

Can't go wrong with Mozart (symphonies 25, 40, 41, piano concerto 20, clarinet quintet in A all being my favourites) or Beethoven (symphonies 4, 5, 6, 9). Haydn is awesome (his trumpet concerto, the 'surprise' & 'clock' symphonies). Personally I find Bach brilliant when he's on form but really heavy going a lot of the time (try the Little Fugue BWV578 and the 3rd Brandenburg Concerto). Schubert is the god of melody, you must listen to his symphonies 5 (Bb major), 8 (B minor, the 'unfinished') and 9 (C major, the 'great'), as well as his clarinet quintet in A (the 'trout') and some of his piano impromptus.

I don't dabble with the romantics quite so much, but I can recommend Brahms's 'Academic Festival Overture' and his violin concerto, Schumann's 'Spring' Symphony and Liszt's 2 piano concertos and '12 Transcendental Etudes'.

In terms of modern music Philip Glass (go for his later works, the early stuff bores me to tears) and Terry Riley (check out his 'In C') would be the way to go.

In my very humble opinion. :D

re michalis, are you greek by any chance?

Thanks, for the suggestions. I already love Mozart but I will try out Schubert as I love melodies.

I'm intrested in string quartets. I love the way composers get such a big sound from just 4 instruments. Any recomendations?

Thanks

Oh and yes I am half Greek.

I'm going to spell this wrong, but Shostakovich did some beautiful stuff (if depressing )

Hiya :o

Compared to America, *nowhere* in England is too far from anywhere else!

Getting mobbed, probably  Um... the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is based here at the moment, if that's any clue. And we have a cool traffic system where tourists come into the town and are never seen again...

Singing is an instrument  Welcome!

It's SO scary how I can almost understand that. I don't know a word of Italian. just a lot of French. =S

Ah! Sei Italiano? Benvenuto, signorina! Sono anche Italiano ma habito in America. Mia famiglia abbiamo originato
Italians are hawt...

As are Puerto Rican girls....

Hello everyone! :) I'm mahlerian, (or mahlerfan on two other sites) and as you can tell I am a big fan of Gustav Mahler's music. I have played the French Horn for the past three years. This is my second year composing and I am enjoying it very much. Although I really like the sound of the brass section I like all orchestra sections about equal. My favorite style of music is classical. Other favorite composers of mine include Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky. My movie and book interests include The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Star Wars.

Sounds like you're going to be mist best friend. :)

Those are my favorite books, my favorite instrument, and some of my favorite composers.
