Hey everybody! Just thought I'd introduce myself to the community here. I've referenced the forums before for help with music and what not.

I'm fairly young, only 16 and a sophomore in high school. I don't have much experience with music composition but I love music all together.

Since I don't have much knowledge in composition, I'm mostly here to learn and listen :D

Hello!! Welcome to the site!

Hi everyone I'm Corey, I'm 18 and still in high school, I've played since I was 8 or years old. I'm probably not like most of you however, I basically can't read music, I would rather play by ear. I can listen to almost any song (except difficult classical) and sit down and begin to play it. If its a song I really like, I can usually capture the emotion and dynamics the artist uses as well. Because I play by ear, I memorize all my music, sometimes I feel could play all day, if allowed. I'm currently enjoying playing Chopin and Rachmaninoff pieces. Rachmaninoff is my favorite composer. I just started composing within the past year, although i can't write any of it down, its very similar to the style of Rachmaninoff. All of it so far is in C sharp minor, I currently have two songs composed and hope to get feedback here shortly. Both use lots of chords and the first piece is around 7 minutes long.

Hi, and welcome to Young Composers.

Have you ever thought about learning to read and write down the music that you compose? It would be really helpful to others and yourself, I'm sure, if you considered it. In the long run, of course, this would be helpful unless you have a really good memory and never forget anything you play!

hi, im eric. i play the violin(10 years) and a little bit of piano, and instrument that i recently became interested in. Since I already knew how to read music, playing simple songs on the piano was not a problem. all i'm missing from playing piano is the technique. I recently learned and memorized the piano solo "Ashitaka and San" by Joe Hisaishi. About a year ago, i met a someone who became my close friend. he plays bass guitar and guitar. i found out that he also had a passion for music, and together we created a song. we called it Oriental Flavor because of the asian themes we included in our song. Since then i've been intrigued by what we can do and i've started to give composing a try. I joined this because i'm really interested in creating my own music and hopfully this site can give a few pointers on how to compose. I use FL Studio to compose because i couldn't get Finale 2007 to work with GPO. but i've recently been working a piano version of Oriental Flavor and would like to print the sheet music so i'm gonna have to use Finale again but it needs to work with GPO so i can hear it with the awesome Steinway piano sample they have.

Hi everybody, I'm eru (said Ed-ooo) from New Zealand. I play the bouble bass, mandolin, bass guitar, guitar, piano, timpani and I sing. I have been songwriting on and of since I was about 11. I enjoy metal, rock, folk, country, marches and overtures. I also enjoy other types of music. Well bye for now!

Oy there!

I just jumped on the bandwagon a minute ago.

Me: Hi, I'm Angela.

Musically: Can't live without music. I had crappy "music lessons" in grade school. I really wanted to play clarinet, but long story short, I wasn't allowed. Not too long ago I bought one, and figured out "Hey, its not meant to be." Because no matter how hard I try, I can only get windy sounds from it. But my love has always been piano. I've played with pianos and keyboards since I was knee high to a grasshopper. For some reason I didn't turn out like Tori, probably because I didn't have the support (oh, woe is me).

I'd love to eventually start dabbling with dulcimers and try violin out. I don't have the pain tolerance I used to to pick up on my guitar lessons, but I do play a bit with that, too.

In Other News: I'm 25, female, live in southern Oregon, childfree, artist, writer (working on a poetry book right now, and working on a fantasy trilogy). I also do a lot of volunteering in my community, and some day I hope I can mentor people, even if its just through my writings or art. Besides practicing with music, I try my hand at readings, and I've picked up gardening.

Did I mention I'm obsessed with computers and video games? Yeah, I practically sleep with my Nintendo DS ^-^

I'm here at these forums because I really need to expand my musical knowledge. I've wanted to compose music since I was a wee lass, but never had the know-how to get it out. I hope to both learn and share what I have learned here. I believe that we must keep our eyes open at all times, because you never know what you're going to learn, and you will never learn enough in a lifetime.

I have a shiny new Casio Privia, and I'm NOT afraid to use it!

Okay, this was a long, hyper message 'cause I just had too much ice cream.

-x

Welcome Angela :)

May your stay here be a pleasent and informative one.

(would Xeen, come from the Clouds of Xeen or something? Cause if so, that would be awesmoe! :D)

Hiya Nikolas, thanks for the welcome.

Actually, Xeen is short for Xeentar, which was a name I made up whilst I was in high school for an odd little critter I drew. Then it became my internet nickname (yes, 10 years of the Internet, woo!). Then all my friends started calling me random variations of Xeen and Xeentar. But it turns out, there's some sort of video game called "Knights of Xentar" or somesuch. I have never heard of "Clouds of Xeen" though :-/

I tend to frown upon the musically illiterate. Be sure to correct it. It will be extremely helpful.

Hello to all young composers,

I am new here as a member, I hope we can be friends by music feelings, it mean to compose clean music must have clean heart.

Hello,

my name's apolosius from west borneo, ketapang country Indonesia. now, i live in jogyakarta Indonesian. I'm new here and just wanted to say "hi" :(

Hi Lado and Apolosius. Welcome to the site.

Hi. I'm Andrew from Minnesota. I've never really done much composition before, but that's something I want to change. I've been playing the piano and singing for pretty much all of my life (I'm 19 now), and I want to pick up the guitar, but with everything else I've got going on this summer, that may have to wait.

As for compositions I've done, nothing really of note. Lately, I've only come up with a few measures of what might turn into a theme for piano and violin if I took the time to expand on it, but I've got a more-developed piano piece I started writing a few years ago, and a couple things I did in Electronic Music last semester (mainly recordings off an old Yamaha DX-7 I imported into Digital Performer and messed around with), but like I said, I've really never focused on composition. Hopefully, with some free time (no job as of yet), that will change.

Also, I'm not sure if this deserved its own thread, but there's a major mental block I've been running into lately when I try and think about what I want to write- I've heard so much music (it seems) that whenever I sit down and come up with some sort of theme, I realize that it's from something I've heard before- a movie, a game, a new generic pop song that I really think I hate but still seems to have some musical merit. Maybe it's because the origins of what I'm "composing" come from music I'm truly inspired by, music I want to emulate (no need to respond "make your own style"- I already know), but to me, it seems so hard to come up with something original. I remember snippets of movie scores that stand out in my memory and I think "That's what I want to write"- haunting piano lines contrasted with solo violin so sad that it should almost make listeners cry- and it's when I try and write those that I can't write anything original.

I'm rambling, but here's hoping I'll be able to come back soon with something that's really mine.

Hello.

It's fine if you realize you've written out something you've heard before. I've done that, and often the fragment is so small or is used in such a different context that not even the artist you got it from would recognize it. This also becomes easier to avoid as the music you listen to becomes more focused on your area of choice and you become more certain of your musical faculties. You don't have to worry about copyright infringement until you're world-famous. So just write out what you've got in your head and move ahead as a composer.

Hello,

this is frederik from Belgium trying to make contact...

I've joyned here because this appears to be a website where you can get usefull critical comments on your pieces - and that's just the kind of thing I need.

I'll be uploading some things in the near future, and I hope you'll help me out with your suggestions.

Bye,

frederik

Hellooo... I really don't know what to write... but I'll give it a try..

I started play guitar when I was 9 years old.. and didn't really thing of it as a big deal.. but sometimes I took little pieces of music and putted it together, and made little songs ... I grew older and began playing Classical guitar, and I've begun to make Symphony's and pretty little guitar pieces... I haven't done the 'big' composition for guitar yet... but My first symphony is great.. =P

Oh ... and this year I may come in on the Music Academy =P

Hi, I am Billwaa.

I play in the school Orchestra, which we just had a music tour to Italy. I also had a band called Ford Street.

I am a 3D modeler and graphic designer. Kind of a programmer.

Welcome guys:)

Rob, 22, London.

Was a regular on the old board back in the days when everyone thought Y2K would kill us all - btw are the old forums still viewable, would be funny to re-read some of the old posts from there? Still composing, now have a music degree, thought I re-register and see what the new forums are like.

Play flute and piano though am a bit rusty. Home studio consists of me, a keyboard, Sonar, Kontakt and EWQLSO Gold. I'm online at Robert Henson - Composer - www.roberthenson.net if anyone cares to have a butchers.

Anyway, look forward to many long, pointless discussions in future...

Hello all! I've played the piano for ten years now and the cello for 4 years. I'm in Youth Symphony and principal of the school orchestra (not saying much). I used to compose a lot more, but recently I've been so busy . . . I'm trying to change that.

Hello Rob, glad you found your way back here again.

And, welcome, enigmaticalcellist!

Rob, 22, London.

Cool. All the old-school YCers are good, without exception. I got in on the end of the last iteration of YC, though I don't know the real history of this place. You can educate me, if you like. Welcome back.

Hey Rob! I have a vague recollection of you from the old board. Nice to see you around again. :w00t:

EDIT: Forgot to add, the server the old forums were hosted on has unfortunately been taken offline, however the data has been preserved. We used to have it archived on here, actually, until we ourselves moved server and the archive software refused to co-operate with the new setup. It's a distinct future possibility to restore that functionality, though.

Just had a look a the 100 greatest YC thread, and names that I remember from years ago are: Beeri (Israeli, am I correct?), Jeff Ball, Marisa Brook (who I believe I have as one of my friends on MSN still!), J. Lee Graham (the oldest member when I posted before), Stefan Inglis (who I seem to remember as a bit of a techno geek), Chris Shaver, David, Michelle, Chopin and Jamie Frost.

Wasn't there also some guy called the Baron, or some such ridiculous title?

Are any of these guys still around?
