On behalf of Will Kirk I say "You are welcome" :P

:sigh:...But a happy sigh that recognizes happy sarcasm. (At least I THINK it's happy.) :) I just hope Will Kirk's was once such post.

Hey, I'm Brian...

I am a junior in high school. I play cello and a small amount of piano, mostly for the purpose of writing. I've written casually for a while, but over the summer it became serious (ex. actually getting Finale in addition to a handwritten score). I'm deciding which area of music I should persue as a career...

I'm deciding which area of music I should persue as a career...

Welcome Brian.

Which area of music...meaning performance, or composition, or other (business, recording?)?? Because performance/composition are easy enough to do both...why not do them all. We kind-of have to! :P

Hope you stick around.

Thanks...I'm sure this will be my source of criticism for anything i write now...

I was thinking about doing double performance and composition...play in an ensemble or two, do some private lessons, and write music in whatever time i have left.

an idealistically nice life.

You might not get an institution to 'technically' let you graduate with a double major in both, but it's easy (and common) to do exactly what you describe, and take lessons in both. I am. ;)

Welcome to YC, Mr. Cello!

Firstly, I do triple performance (including Piano) as well as composition and play in two orchestras, so it's possible, but I wouldn't reccomend it if you want any time left to do anything else. Are you in school? This will limit everything you can do. If you are, stick with Cello, mild Piano and composition, if you can get time for that... I'm homeschooled, so I have more time than many kids my age.

Welcome again, Dimitri!

Hi all... I've just kind of jumped in and started posting, without introducing myself. I'm a lifelong musician, currently enjoying middle-age. Piano and composition are my main musical areas. Studied at Juilliard and Indiana. I've worked with some inspiring teachers, and was inspired to teach as well. Worked in radio in NYC for many years, as a producer/host, have composed for various vocal and instrumental combinations, and still practice piano every day. I'm composing a tonal children's operetta at the moment, though I've written purely atonal music as well.

I love hearing the talent displayed here, especially the "first-fruits" of natural untamed inspiration! I can be a bit overly-impassioned sometimes... sorry. Probably won't be a regular contributor, but will visit when I want a fun break. Thanks for the Board!

Welcome camaysar, nice to have you on board YC :)

Just did not really catch your name. :)

Hi all. I'm Mike. I live in New Jersey and have been composing for the better part of three years now, though I've been playing tuba for about ten. I am a sophomore in college, currently attending Carnegie Mellon University where I study under Reza Vali and Nancy Galbraith.

It's great to be here as two of my true passions in life are music and message boards. I can't wait to jump right in.

Aha! A composer who primarily plays tuba! I didn't see that one coming... welcome to the forums! I play tuba as well, not my primary, but I picked it up about a half a year ago, so I'm having a grand 'ole time with it.

Hee hee. Yeah... I love tuba, but sometimes I had more background in piano! My grade in piano would definately appreciate it.

Hi, I'm Rachel. I'm 17 and live in the UK. I don't have very much education in music theory, but I play the euphonium and have been composing for about a year.

Hi there. I'm Maz, and I'm currently in my final year of University, studying for a music and education degree. It's quite stressful at the moment, what with my Dissertation and PGCE interviews etc!

I compose for my composition module at university, and like to compose on my spare time, if i have any! I mainly write orchestral pieces, though i do also write pop songs, and soundtracks to small movies or movie trailers.

I started to take piano lessons in September, and am working towards taking my grade 6 in July time.

Outside of music, i work in a care home at weekends, and volunteer at a local primary school, helping pupils with their reading.

Well hello everyone! I'm 24 and have recently discovered this website. I'm a musical director for companies around western canada, and I own my own business. I have been composing since I was 12 but yes, respectivly since I was 16. I have studied under Dr. Cheryl Cooney, and Dr. Ross Debrusin. I have two world premiere symphonies and many other piano pieces.

More importantly I'm thrilled to be meeting new composers of our generation, and discover new ways of interpreting music. Please contact me any time as I will most likely contact you!! Thanks to the forum for having me as a member. Cheers and happy 2008!

Well hello everyone! I'm 24 and have recently discovered this website.

Welcome - always good to have more Canadian content on here!

Canada the land of free healthcare

I'm so glad I've found this site! I'm 22 and my name is Gaute. If that's hard to pronounce, it's (G-OW-TEE, not G-OA-TEE) I'm from the city Bergen, in the little nation of Norway.

I've been meddeling with arranging for about two years, had a one year course last year, but plan on taking something like musicology next fall. I play the guitar, mostly jazz, but some pop as well. I also sing in an amature choir.

I'm still working with my SATB choral skills, but plan to move a bit onwards from that during this year. Hopefully with the help of this site!

Once again glad to have found this site!

welcome to yc gaute!

Hi everyone, my name is Matthew Lee Knowles and I am a 22 year old composer, almost at the end of a composition degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, in London. I am also a pianist. When I was young I played tenor horn.

I work mainly as a conceptual composer, which means I do a lot of questioning about music and don't always work in traditional methods, especially when it comes to notation. I write a lot of graphic scores, which I think helps to release my musical ideas and give them more room to breathe. I often write event, or word scores, for example, if i want a flautist to play a series of very high notes and low notes, I will write this in words instead; I do this because I feel it is more successful for me, my mind and my music and also it immediately makes the performer think in a different, more inquisitive manner. Of course, this type of composition isn't for everyone, I just feel very comfortable writing like this!

I enjoy looking for art and music EVERYWHERE, be it on a train, in the shower or in your imagination, this is why some of my pieces are instruction scores, for example, get on a bus and listen, or, walk down a road and clap your hands. One such instruction score was to make 100 sounds, and was performed in quite a small space by about 150 people.

I am very interested in the relationship between the performer of music and the audience, and I have written many pieces exploring this; I often like to blur the line so much, that it is hard to tell who is who.

I am happy to share my pieces with everyone here and having discussions about the points I have made above. I will soon put some scores up (scores which I hope will generate lots of interest!) in the meantime, if you go to: MySpace.com - Matthew Lee Knowles - UK - Classical / Experimental / Other - www.myspace.com/composermatthewknowlespianist

you can see some scores and also listen to some music.

I also teach and write music for the theatre, having recently completed a score for Shakespeares "The Winter's Tale" and now working on the score for "August", a Welsh setting of "Uncle Vanya"

I can imagine that I am probably quite a different composer on here now, but I do write traditional music for traditional instruments as well and am happy to look at your scores and give my honest opinions.

I look forward to talking with you all about our music!

Matthew

Hi!

I'm a 24-year old Finnish hobbyist composer with a 2-year background in composition. Practically everything I ever learnt about music is self-taught from reading books and haphazard experimentation. Compositionally I'm mostly interested in classical and soundtrack style music, but I have tried my hand at popular music also.

Currently I plan to take my composition to a more 'serious' level by applying to a college-level composition programme in the coming spring. I started taking piano lessons this fall and I'm also considering to start singing lessons with the aim of improving my voice so that I can sing ear training exercises plausibly.

I'm looking forward to getting to know all the people in here :)
