A New Beginning

Featured Replies

Hi there,I havne't postet any work of mine for quite some time now... So here's "A New Beginning". ;) It's mainly a guitar piece. It is acoompanied by strings, a glockenspiel and some percussion. The score does not contain the percussion or any dynamic marks, sorry about that. I've written it in Cubase and tried to work out a proper sibelius score from the midi file... Maybe I'll improve it someday.

A New Beginning

I really have nothing negative to say about this, it's outstanding!

This is really beautiful work, I can easily imagine it in a film (I personally hear melancholy but see someone taking action in the middle). Score aside, I have few recommendations, although I would like to hear more dynamics. Are you using maracas in the background?

Perhaps this music would be better suited for the Game and Film forum. I say that because the reviewers there are more likely to give you tips on enhancing the sound quality of your midi mock-up.

Thanks, both of you!

About what I had in mind when writing it, actually ;-)

Well I can't be quite sure about this (in the sample library they were just "ethnic percussion->tiny percussion"), but I think you're right^^

I'll see if I can move it.

Thanks again :-)

This is very pretty and could work in a number of situations.

So far extremely musical.

I was going to say a bit more variation before 1:30 would be appreciated. Listening to it a second time, I was lying. The guitar is changing chords and pretty everything from 0:50-1:30 feels nice. Perhaps it was more string I wanted. How do you feel about that section 0:40-1:30?

Very beautiful string lines around 1:50.

The ending of the transition at 2:40 could have been done better. You have the guitar doing quarter notes in a line that wants to resolve to beat one of the next bar. Instead, you strum a chord. I think this part would feel more cohesive if you finished the guitar's quarter note melody. Who knows, maybe you can have the strummed chord as well or the strings playing the chord in the background.

There are certain parts towards the end where the guitar sounds a little fake. This is because it's exposed at that section, trying to be expressive and natural which is obviously very difficult to do with midi.

This is awesome work olibrehm. I can't wait to hear more. :phones:

Very pretty and relaxing. The title fits-...

The music fits the title very well.

Thumbs up. Can't wait to hear more from you.

I can totally hear this playing in a game, like embarking on a new journey in an RPG or something.

I like how you have a more melancholic sound in the beginning, then an action part,

and then it builds down again.

I don't think you should change anything, it sounds great to me ^_^

Thank you, I'm looking forward to it :-)

Well, I actually didn't use many strings there on purpose so that the solo cello comes out more clearly.

A bit of a matter of personal taste, I think, I like it that way ;-)

Absolutely true, but I'm planing to have at least the guitar part recorded soon. I'm looking forward to the "real" sound.

Thanks, all of you!

Heya Oliver!

Glad you're posting again. This is a very relaxing work to listen to, and it's melodically pleasing. The writing is quite thin, but I assume you wanted it that way, so I won't bug you too much for it. Suffice it to say that the beginning could have used some more orchestrational colour (not necessarily size, just more richness in the arrangement) for my ears.

In terms of the production, the instruments aren't sounding like they're in a real space because you haven't panned them. That shaker is also quite loud. I think if you spent some time with panning, EQ, and levels to properly "place" the instruments on your virtual stage, you would have a much more convincing mockup. It would also help the real guitar sound even better once you get that recorded and layered in.

Nice work overall though, I enjoyed it.

I quite like this one....simple but effective.

The start reminds me of those ambient tracks from Baldurs Gate :) and then the section seems like a scene from a wildlife show IMO. Can't really fault it though, so kudos to that!!

Ok, thanks, I had a go on it again and reuploaded the music file (see original post).

You're absolutely right the shakers were much too loud. I also never did panning in my pieces before  , thanks for the tip.

I love the sound of the staccato strings during the faster paced parts. Excellent work!

This is absolutely gorgeous. I love it! Especially the climax when the high-strings come in. Reminds me of Mitsuda's Chrono Cross Soundtrack, if you had that in mind.

Great piece! But i have to say, with some few minor changes, you could use only one guitar instead of two. Anyway, that was probably your intention so great job!

Keep up the good work!

Love it!

In terms of the score, I just noticed that you don't seem to have all the percussion appearing. You might want to make sure you've got the program detecting the right keys for the percussion track. That can be a bit of a hassle sometimes, but if the score is important to you then you don't want missing percussion!

This might just be me, but I would have liked to hear you fill out the string section a bit more in your return to the A theme, before quieting back down to just the guitar. You come out of the B section with a lot of momentum and build-up, and I think it dissipates to soon and you're missing an opportunity to give us that A theme in a really nice, full sound.

I thought so, yes. But I don't play the guitar and so couldn't exactly tell how to make it playable by one.

Love it!

Well, that's it, it wasn't so important to me I guess... But I just like to be able to read the notes when listening.

Thanks both of you for the comments and for digging this up again :)
