Ten - Solo Bb Clarinet

Featured Replies

This is the first piece of music I have ever had premiered by a musician that wasn't...me. This very talented 1st year clarinetist, Nathan Lam, performed my piece for solo Bb Clarinet in May 2009. He did a fantastic job considering the complexity of this piece, my poor clarinet writing and his 2-3 week preparation. He actually improvised a lot of it, and probably around 3:00-30 this can really be noticed. I do not have the score in finale/pdf form just yet because I had hand written it on A3 paper...so that's another reason why I commend him - my handwriting is shocking. The piece is called Ten because it is based on the bible story about the lost coin. The opening melodic phrase symbolise the 9 coins that are in the woman's possession and throughout the piece she frantically tries to search for the 10 coin, which, btw, she finds at the last note: G (sounds A). I tried to capture the emotion/frenzy of searching for something that is lost, and the ending phrase (the falling flute-like arpeggios in a major-ish figure) is kind of like the celebration of finding the tenth coin. Of course, you can interpret this anyway you want, and perhaps one day I'll upload the score, but I only just rediscovered the recording, so I thought I'd upload it PS I lol'd at the sneeze too hahaha. Finally, YC has fixed the upload feature. Thanks!

I'm sorry. It says "file not found"

I'd hate to frustrate you ;)

UGH!

Are you uploading the score and the mp3 simultaneously?

Please re-upload the piece.

YAYAYAYAY RECORDING FINALLY UPLOADED!!!!

So has anyone listened to it yet? :)

Well, the piece works, but the score won't upload :hmmm: I don't know why it's giving you so much trouble.

As for the piece, as I said before, I like the frantic, expressive feel of it: it's accompanying the imaginary scene in one's head pretty well.

(Acccchhhhoooo!)

(Every time I hear a solo clarinet these days, I think of Squidward  Yes, I'm weird)

But don't you think the piece drags on an awful long time? Isn't 2 and a half minutes or so enough to make your point, without becoming tedious, or overstaying its welcome? The same kind of tone for so long is a little much for me to take. Just cut out some fat in the middle of the piece, perhaps? ;)

Nice job, thanks for sharing :)

Hey Serge,

I haven't uploaded a score because I only have it hand written on A3 paper and that won't fit in my scanner haha.

Thanks for the comments, although I think that removing the fat could just be a matter of taste rather than actual musical purpose. I did try to elongate this work as much as I could using the 9 notes to the endth degree, and I do understand where you are coming from, but I don't feel like it goes on for too long, personally.

Anyways, thanks for commenting anyway :)

Nick
