Battle At Norham

This is a recent piece I did. I'm not too proud of it, but I know that I worked hard on it.

Welcome to YC, Phillip! Cool piece!

Nice mood at the beginning. Good orchestral sounds. I wish everything was a bit louder. The bass would drive the beginning a lot better if were turned up a bit. Guitar should be a little louder during its solo.

Getting an Avatar vibe at 1:25. Cool.

Try different string accents from 1:43. Maybe tied eight notes where the second one is a staccato. You can change the articulation in later lines so that's it more legato, but I think it would add to the realism and musicality if you varied the accents here.

I like the percussion you added at 2:30. Add even more. Make it super intense.

3:00 is a nice change of pace. Softer and gentler.

Nice orchestral palette. You throw in a lot of different instruments. Be even more daring. Experiment with some ethnic instruments, some electronic stuff, whatever sounds good and original, do it.

In future mixes, turn everything up. Melt our faces off with your rocking tracks and you're ability as a composer will be undeniable.

Great piece, Phillip! Glad to have you here on YC.

Peace,

-John

Ahaha, I think I know somewhere where you might fit in John....

I agree with everything John's laid out, though I will add that you need to tweak your programming a bit. It's just not humanistic enough. Use expression and volume curves, and edit velocities to avoid the machine gun effect. Really get in there and edit the MIDI data.

i wouldn't recommend that, not that andy isn't an awesome composer, i respect him, but if you work with a daw the best way for you is to learn how to use modwheel samples and so that you can control all this in real time instead of spending so much time on editing. i know i used to do that, but once you learn to do it good with real time it takes a huge less amount of time because you get better at it also.

and by the way nice composition, it sounded just about right to the atmosphere, i didn't hear anything unique about it though, wish you could put some more spice in there.

Andy, are you offering me a job at RCP? I have written proof!

I think the modwheel samples are ideal for sustained notes you want to crescendo and decresecndo. For separate notes however, you have a lot more control if you're editing each note individually.

Food for thought =)

a very nice listening, i like this !

just to say:

u could use less strings for all of the themes and more brass and woodwinds (to have more variety)

the first section with guitar is very nice, use it more!

find a good idea for the end, now its only cut.

bye, ale
