February Competition 2012 (Official)

:) Here you go:

February Contest 2012

Winter "Woodwind"-Land

(february 2nd through february 27th)

Judging will occur from midnight (00:00) on the 28th through March 2nd (00:00). Results will be posted that same day or a day later, depending on the Monthly Competition God's feelings that day.

The purpose of this competition is to broaden the views of experienced and inexperienced composers with the use of woodwinds. Heckel has made it clear that he would like the woodwinds to paint a WINTER-esque setting. Let the coldest month of the year inspire you to blow that wind! :D

The Competition: Write a quintet for Woodwinds. You may use ANY woodwind instrument (including STRATEGIC USAGE of uncommon woodwinds. A.K.A. - Alto flute, Eb clarinet, English Horn, etc.)

Prize: There is no prize set out right now. YET, Heckel could come up with something. I'm pretty sure he knows people in the woodwind family. IF there ends up being no prize, I will personally see to it that you are given a recording of a future work for Baritone and Piano. ;) hahaha. Really, though! Just remember that every piece you get recorded, no matter what it's for, is better than having no recording of a better piece. It shows you want to work with HUMANS instead of Finale/Sib.

Judging: When you submit the piece, please provide a short description or program notes detailing your compositional process. You will be DOCKED a maximum of 20 points for this egregious error.

Musical Content/Structure/Concept (is it Wintery?): 40 Points

Use of Woodwind Instrumentation (technique and playability): 25 Points

Creativity/Interesting Woodwind combination choice: 25 Points (who can play it? are both parts equal in skill level?)

Score: 10 points. :)

Judges.

Count me in!

Is there a time limit or max?

  • Author

The Official Rules for 2012 state that no piece should exceed 5 minutes. There is no minimum, but there is a development category. :)

Hmm... sounds interesting. I had really never worked with a woodwind combination before the Jabberwocky competition, and I liked the result.

EDIT: Isn't it "February" and not "Febrary" or "Ferrari"?

Yeah, I'm intrigued too. Let me think on't.

Count me in!

Austenite. hahahaah. WOW. Good going, Con. lol. I fixed it... I didn't see Ferrari. Also, are you wanting to do this? You didn't specify really in your post.

Lee, just tell me before the 12th.

Jlehman777, you're on the docket!

Austenite (...) I didn't see Ferrari.

Neither did I - but 'Febrary' sounded just too much like 'Ferrari'.

As for the competition itself, I'm about as decided as J. Lee. But leaning towards an outright 'yes'.

I think I'll take a stab at this...

Welcome to the fray, Nick. :)

I cannot put my own family to shame! I shall enter!

Can I be judge?

I would like to do this too :D

(I'm new to this so I am not sure how these competitions work. Could someone direct me to information on how to enter? Thank you!)

  • Author

You'll be added to the docket by me. :) I'll put you on soon.

Tina, with only 13 posts, I'm slightly uncomfortable making you judge for this competition, as you have not yet been very active on the site. Yet, if applicants do not show up for judging positions by the 12th, I would be glad to give you a trial run. Thank you for understanding my concern, as I take these competitions very seriously, and I only need people of the greatest experience to provide feedback for this so that our members will benefit the most.

Thats fine

I'll try I think...

Thank you very much :D

I'll judge because it was my idea :P

I definately want to join!

  • Author

We have made par with the competition competitors. :) We still need one more judge! And, you can join as a competitor still too up until the 15 person limit is reached. And, there are 6ish whole days left!

BUT, don't forget to get started! The piece is DUE the 27th!!!!!

How exactly to you join in?

Is it too late?

  • Author

No it's not too late!

You just say you want to sign up! You have until the 12th to decide!

How do you sign up? I have never done this before. Thanks for reply!

  • Author

You don't do anything except SAY you want to sign up.

Would you like to sign up?

And, when you say yes, I just add you to the roster and you get an email from me detailing the competition after the joining closes on the 12th.
