June 18, 201411 yr I thought you guys might be interested in this opportunity: I work for OperaUpClose, an award-winning opera company based at the King’s Head Theatre in Islington in London. I wanted to let you know that submissions for Flourish, a new opera competition which we launched in association with Eclectic Opera, are now open, and I was hoping you might be able to circulate some information to your composition students and members of your establishment you believe might be interested. Flourish, now in its third year, aims to provide a platform for emerging and established composers and librettists, and to raise awareness of the wealth of contemporary opera being written.Composers and librettists are invited to submit up to 20 minutes worth of material of a new opera for up to seven performers. The first stage of the competition culminates in a showcase of extracts from up to five short-listed operas at the King's Head Theatre on Sunday 21 September 2014. The deadline for submissions is midnight on Sunday 17 August 2014.A panel of industry judges will choose a winner from the short-listed operas. The winning composer and librettist will then have a year to develop the piece, culminating in a full-length production, produced by OperaUpClose at the King's Head Theatre for a season over four weeks in autumn 2015.For more information and to apply, visit www.kingsheadtheatre.com/flourish.htmlOr email flourish@kingsheadtheatre.com
June 18, 201411 yr Done. Also, the bare-boned review post system (when compared with the forum post system), the broken composer profile link problem and the website's weird multiple-personality disorder of having essentially two main pages (Home and Forum.)
June 19, 201411 yr This is excellent! I don't think I'll be able to make it by August 17th, I am so self-critical, but who knows... If not this year, then definitely next one. Very motivating, just what I needed! :)
June 19, 201411 yr I have never really tried my hand at an opera, so I doubt I'll be able get anything done in such a short span - but I'll look into the details of this. Who knows...
July 2, 201411 yr I don't have anything writing yet for it, but dang it, it sounds like a good competition!
July 30, 201411 yr The description on the page has a stipulation that says that "composers and librettists are allowed up to 7 performers (divided between instrumentalists and singers as you wish)" does this mean no grand orchestra? What the hell kind of opera is that, then?
