December 25, 201411 yr Just the theme? Exactly 16 bars? No harmonization of the theme? Elaborate a bit as to what you have in mind, I'm trying to picture how to write something satisfying that's that short. Or would you just write as normal, introduce your theme, and have to stop dead after 16 bars, the winner being the person everyone most wanted to keep going. (: Harmonise! Harmonise! Exactly that, we could write as normal, then stop at 16 or so bars perhaps :)
December 29, 201411 yr Very well! So shall it be. I think that's definitely a way better plan for handling the challenges.
January 21, 201511 yr I'll get the ball rolling. http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7212/16%20Bar%20Melody
January 21, 201511 yr Great! I was waiting for a new thread for it, but I realized now (with Ali) that we must submit the melodies first^^ I'll compose mine right now! Hang on!
January 21, 201511 yr Ok, so here's mine: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7213/MelodiaSorry, it came out as a 15-bars melody... I didn't hamonize it because I'd really like to hear how someone else would do it ^^
January 21, 201511 yr Mine's up too. http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7215/16%20Bar%20Theme%20Challenge
January 21, 201511 yr Here, also is mine: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7214/YC%20Theme%20Challenge:%20The%20Third%20Round%20%22Death%20Match%22
January 21, 201511 yr Hey, I just thought: I don't we change this challenge a little bit? Instead of choosing one single theme for everybody to compose (and the choosen one does nothig but wait), we could just rearrange the themes and the composers in such a way that everyone will have a theme from another person and everyone would have his/her own theme being recomposed by someone else :D What do you think?
January 21, 201511 yr Yes! That's a perfect idea. Much more interesting too. I call Danish's theme :P
January 21, 201511 yr Are there any other parameters besides being 16 bars? I'm gonna write me right now, but I just wanted to double check.
January 21, 201511 yr None whatsoever. Compose as you please. As you may tell from Christian's example, the 16 bar rule is not super steadfast. You can make it slightly shorter or longer if it serves the purposes of the music. I would say you are free to decide whether you harmonize it or not. That sums it up really.
January 21, 201511 yr First of all, I'm glad people actually are participating in this...yay! Christian: That's a good idea! I don't really have a preference, so someone can pick a theme for me. Thanks KJ for choosing mine, lol
January 21, 201511 yr Should have midi/pdf up shortly, but: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7218/16-bar-challenge/
January 22, 201511 yr Here's my entry! :) http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7221/16-Bar%20Challenge
January 22, 201511 yr Perhaps I'm a bit late for the party, but... I think I might come up with a theme and let someone else tinker with it while I buy time to look into everyone else's pieces.
January 22, 201511 yr Are we picking the themes we want? Or will we be picking themes out a hat (or something similar)?
January 22, 201511 yr Oh well I called Danish's theme mainly as a joke (although of the themes presented thus far his seems the most friendly to me so I do in fact hope to get it) but I don't know exactly how everyone wants to decide it. Perhaps we'll play "Rock, Paper, Scissors" in the shout box :P Or something more practical. I'm not sure how we should do this actually... We can't very well assign them randomly as most methods of doing so are impractical if not impossible via the internet. Unless someone has some genius method of which I am unaware. I suppose we can tackle that problem while we wait for Austenite's theme. Edited January 22, 201511 yr by KJthesleepdeprived
January 22, 201511 yr Yeah I figured you weren't serious about calling "dibs" or anything like that...but it did suddenly dawn on me that we have a bunch of themes and no practical way of making sure there's a parity between themes. While I'm not actively opposed to picking them ourselves I think there were ways (mostly involving randomizers) to make sure no theme gets left behind, so to speak. On the more technical side, if there's an odd number of themes we wouldn't even be able to swap them between two people...which moves me to the idea of random sorting. Or maybe everyone just takes the submission done before/after them? Edited January 22, 201511 yr by JFTFT
January 22, 201511 yr That last idea seems the best to me. If we all take the theme that came after ours, that would be a pretty fair way to handle it. We'll have to wait until we're sure that everyone who is going to participate has submitted their theme, of course. So far I think that just means we're waiting for Austenite. Unless someone else posts to the thread stating their desire to participate, we could just assume that Austenite will be the last one and begin as soon as he has submitted his theme. How does everyone else feel about this? Any objections?
January 22, 201511 yr I'm with whatever you guys decide. I also think we, the participants, should refrain from commenting on each other's themes until the end, so we don't create a bias environment (yes some of have commented on one of those themes already...but whatever). January 22, 201511 yr Author And here's my entry: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7222/16-bar-theme-challenge/
January 22, 201511 yr Oh oops. Well I've forgotten all about you two. God knows who else I'm neglecting to remember :P Well then I suppose we shall wait to see if anyone else offers their opinions on the method of assigning themes before making it official, but I don't see any reason why we shouldn't go along with the current plan.
January 23, 201511 yr I'm not sure how we should do this actually... We can't very well assign them randomly as most methods of doing so are impractical if not impossible via the internet. Unless someone has some genius method of which I am unaware. I suppose we can tackle that problem while we wait for Austenite's theme. We could have one person use the random name selector and put the results in the thread. https://www.teachstarter.com/random-name-selector/ i'm not exactly sure how it would work but i'm just throwing around ideas.
