Variations on a theme by Schönberg

Recommended Posts

I didn't enter the last great competition, but I began to write this piece thinking of it. Now that the competition is over, I'd like to bring it here. It was funny mixing atonal, tonal and contemporary languages.

The are two scores. They are the same, but one of them includes notes about the series or chords used in every variation.

There are also two files with notes (in English and in Spanish).

Greetings!

Very inventive variations, and quite clear, though they could have been more so. I love the tonal shifts, despite the source material. I would have liked to have seen more prime form variations, rather than just thematic ones, also some more drastic changes throughout, but what you have here is quite nice.

Great! Very interesting hearing an atonal theme explored in so many different styles. I particularly enjoyed the fugue and the impressionistic variation, and the syncopations in the canonic variation were very interesting as well. It all really allows you to explore everything that particular theme could be, beyond what you might have imagined, and it works really well.
