"Transition"

Hello everyone,

It's been a long time since my last upload here (My last post is my String Quartet I).

This year has been a hectic year and I don't have many composing ideas. But I do have some feelings upon the changes in my academic prospect (+) and the relationship with a lady friend (-) (Unfortunately we don't talk anymore). So I decided to write this String Quartet to remind me of these incidents. Currently, I have written one movement for it only. The string quartet, in my opinion, is more dramatic than my first one. Hope you all enjoy it:) It would be great if you can kindly leave some comments.

Regards,

HoYin

P.S. I was using the default sound library of Musescore but I changed to Florestan String SoundFont in an attempt to improve the quality of Strings in my track. Tell me if the soundfont is good:P

Okay, main thing: cello part starting at m. 45 is a mess. Starts way too low and goes way too high. Not sure what you were doing there. The ending was also kind of awkwardly abrupt. Add some bowings and slurs in there and gradual dynamic changes. It looks terraced the way you have it now.
Overall, though, it maintains a good character (except the soundfont, which, admittedly, is kind of painful still, but that's not your fault ), but sounds almost like it's entirely polyphony with no real stops for a long time (in the main section). It's just very easy to tune out of, since it's so hard to see what one direction was intended with it. Nice job.

Yes, the sound is not pretty, but that's not your fault, of course.

I agree with Monarcheon that the whole piece runs with no pause... That makes it a bit plain, no contrast.

In some parts there is classic tonal harmony, but in other parts there are chromatic notes that clash with other ones. I don't think your intention was to make something atonal, which also needs an organization, but chromatic.

This is a random example, here you have several notes at the same time (or almost): A - A# - B - C#... It's not easy to control the dissonance at a high level, even one must be careful with a single dissonant line (I tell you because I'm into this, studying it and I admit sometimes I go too far). Since this happens very often I feel I'm a bit lost sometimes.

However I also think you've done a nice job and, in the end, if you like it.... Nothing is good or bad.

Thank you for your comments, Monarcheon and Luis Hernandez!

Yes, the music is wrong in m. 45-46 because of the technical issues when I transpose the line to another clef. They should be in octaves higher/lower.

Indeed I used more chromatics in this piece and I also find it hard to control them at the same time. It's a bit hard to strike a balance between making each part smooth melodically while keeping them less dissonance. Any suggestions?

And yeah, I may add some line to make some break for the movement. I should try to start new motifs in those slower lines and build up momentum while re-entering the main theme, right?
