6 Sententiae for Pianoforte

Recommended Posts

I wanted to build a bit on the concept of the sententia -as the short form was created by @luderart. Thus, I decided to turn towards my solace: the piano.

Writing for piano, idk, seems to open me up more to the possibilities within thematic/motivic material. Not sure why... it just does.

The third sententiae uses the opening motif from @maestrowick's The Vivid Dawn.

Anyways, each of these 'sententia' are no more than 12 measures. I chose twelve due to symmetry. That allows 6 measures for each segment of the idea to expand and contract (allow for some motivic development) while at the same time keeping the unique nature of the form intact. Hopefully these succeeded in that task.

Congratulations @jawoodruff for your second set of sententiae! These are pretty inventive and original. You are on your way to becoming a prolific composer of sententiae! It feels good to have some "competition" in the composition of sententiae! I guess that raises the bar a bit while at the same time making the form more established in the repertoire.

It really is a fun form to compose -and challenging at the same time. I had been looking for a form to use when writing miniatures (have been for some years now), so this one definitely presents itself well. I think I'll keep the 12 bar structure of it -as that lends itself well to expanding the types of compositional techniques we can use (which helps build interest, imho). It also helps make it a more robust form in terms of abstraction -if that makes any sense.

Man, your voice is awesome.

That's what I was going to say. I love how your compositions are often layered, having its elements divided into multiple voices that are not that significant on their own, but that make up for a rich soundscape when combined.

Thanks so much for your kind words. I've always suffered from severe low self-confidence. So this means a lot to me.
