L'Amour for Violin Duet

Hey all,

I have recently wrote a piece for my first girlfriend, whom is a pianist. Luckily she likes it lol.

The motivation of writing a duet is that I am practising a list of duets with her, and I really look forward to make more duet for ourselves in the future.

Writing tonal melody for solo violin has been hard for me as highly efficient harmonic and melodic structure is expected, but a duet has eased the task a bit haha.

Hope you enjoy it.

Why is the first violin written smaller?

The piece, in this style and with two instruments, is mainly a counterpoint piece. I think it is very well developed, in the second part I hear more dissonances that, as a contemporary piece, are well introduced and justified, bringing color to the work.

The only thing I miss is some ind of big climax.

Very good work.

Hi @HoYin Cheung,

Let me vow out in Cantonese first:

我中意呢首二重奏!

I love the middle section more since there's more polyrhythm in it, and with a slower tempo it's sweeter and memorable for me.

I just find the transition in b.75-82 a little bit deliberate, maybe since it's the first time the rhythm dies down and modulate. In other places the flow is fluidic and there's some moment when the harmony is oblique I will say, a Bartok like feature! Maybe love for you is a process🤔?

In b.79 and 81 the redundant naturals can be deleted!

Thanks for sharing and hope to see more of your posts here!

@Luis Hernández @Henry Ng Tsz Kiu Thank you for listening! I wish too add more sweetness to the work but the C# major has just enough sharps lol. I have to say the intertwined melody depicts how she and I exchange our ideas and work on a set of common life goals.

@Henry Ng Tsz KiuI am working on my symphony, and that might take some time to finish the first movement and publish it here.

I think the music is sweet, just afraid of the all-too-common sweetness in it!!! Modulation to a mediant major is often very bright for me with 4 sharps added. If you can play cello, I really hope you represent the cello though😅. I find it quite difficult to compose for two homogenous instruments which don't cover the high and lows! But you do well here with the interwined melody. Or you can use the composite melody as in the finale of Tchaikovkst's Pathetique, antiphonal texture or imitations?🤔 That's all what I brainstorm now.

Good to hear this and hope to see it soon!

Very nice piece, and how cool it is to write for someone you're so close to!

I'm guessing you posted your version of the score, that's why the 1st violin is smaller notes? Not a big issue. I'm more curious as to why you chose C# major instead of Db major? Any reason behind that? I'm just always a fan of readability, but if you can do it well, then eh who cares.

I'd love to hear a live recording. She's your gf, make it a cool project that you embark upon together! You could easily do this, and can't wait to hear it.

This is well written, but as you know, midi renditions of violin music don't paint the picture very well, so make it a priority! Even if you're for some reason not able to share it with us here, I'd want nothing more for you to work on music together. Great work, and thanks for sharing.
