Symphonic Competition

I'm gonna go ahead and say now that this competition is for NEW MUSIC ONLY. Pieces that are either in the works already (more than 15% completed?) or finished CANNOT be submitted. This is to ensure fairness between all the completed pieces in the end. No one should have more time to write than anyone else.

That is fine, but all other movements must be submitted, in addition to plans of future movements. But only one movement will be focused on.

anyone could've been working on something for years and 'failed' to mention it so i don't think that that rule is really fair as it can't be policed

I'd like to judge, but I'm relatively inexperienced with symphonies and would probably mess it up...

Nico is right, realism is always much better than being overtly giving, and it would not be called "being a jerk."

Being a jerk would imply him saying something blatantly rude, not something that could be construed as such.... now the "nancy" comment might have been being a jerk...

Is the rule that no portion of the symphony may be started before the start of the competition related to ideas started during the decision process of what the competition would be, works in progress, or previous posted works in the forum?

If you have brief sketches and ideas for the lay-out of your symphony that you devised during the decision process, I think these should be admitted. If a piece is in progress and has been so for a few months (or years) these should only be accepted granted you post new material and not finished works (finished before the competition). And if pieces are previously completed and posted in this forum, they should not be allowed at all.

I think this makes it fair enough, and policing this matter should only be a matter of honor system, much as we police fraudulant works from being posted as well.

Nico- You are gifted enough to begin writing a fresh symphony much as we have the talent to do the same. All is fair that way.

Everyones opinion matters man. If you don't want to say it because somone else will rip you down your being just a bit lazy:P . Your opinions are influenced by the outside world, and you gotta keep an open mind, looking stupid isn't thing once in a while as long as you learn from it.

I also think having somone who has a little less knowledge on how to judge is a good idea. They have a more fresh perspective and may notice things others may not because they have judged before so they might glance over things the NOOB(which is not a bad thing) may not. Wat do you guys say?

There is no length requirement. But keep in mind all the things you must accomplish with the music - development, themes, variety, etc. Most symphonic movements are anywhere from 3 - 15 minutes!

Well, if all you have to say in the piece fits within 2 minutes, then so be it....but yeah, there'd better be a LOT in those 2 minutes for you to win.

isn't one of the key elements of symphonic writig using themes across movements and keeping them linked and so on? how can this be judged with one mvt?

It's often not a key element, no.

You can judge one movement without seeing how another relates to it. At least that is what will be happening in this case; although Nick did say he wanted to see your plans for the other movements (or the other movements, if they're done, I suppose)

I haven't started anything yet, but once I do is it okay to post the in-progress work for input or is that breaking some sort of rule? I like hearing peoples opinions as i go.
