"The Devil's Hands"

Please no more! My ears are bleeding!!!

I recommend that the lord of darkness turn the lights on so he can improvise something worth listening to. Perhaps utilizing more than 5 notes.

What's the point of this?

I think this whole thing is fake. Sorry if this isn't.

"yes it can be quiet monotonous, still, listen to the immortal frenzy potrayed lightspeed avarice of all the sorrounding molecules til theres nothing left to appreciate. What could be more glorious & difficult than so-called five diabolical notes for one single composition, i mean, were talking the progress here"

It wasn't particularly avant-garde and it probably has a musical slot - the sort of interlude you might get on an early Current 93 production like "Live at Bar Maldoror", before they went folksy. There are movie clips it could back.

I reckon it should be moved to "experimental" though.

I would take your music more seriously if; a, you posted a score as it just sounds like random notes played as fast as midi can play it and, b, maybe you can prove that this music is playable to a performer?

As it stands, I cant take it seriously because it is a midi recording and basically I could write something like this in a flash.

Is it me, or are there starting to become a real absence of scores on this site? I have decided not to review works without a score now, and if I do, it is only in exceptional circumstances.

Same here, although I will comment on works where I know the composer can produce a score. Sometimes a score can be a right pain because it won't fit vertically into the pc window so it has to be studied separately scrolling up and down - fine if the music makes that worthwhile but it don'arf tie up a lot of time if not.

I made an exception with this because I reckon it's meant to be performed by computer - the midi rendering is and that's how it would be used. A sort of Dr Phibes goes to Tescos clip.

Heh, mr. Tibet indeed might have used such a piece then.

But it still sounds awful.

I guess the devil improvised by sitting on the organ instead of using his fingers? He should get a teacher. A strict one. Now.

Savant: Perhaps you should try a MIDI-to-Score conversion program. I use MidiIllustrator, a MIDI-to-Score conversion program avaialble from Rallentando software. It does a decent job, and I used it convert one of my pieces in Major Works so that I could post a score. The trial is free, for about 30 trials, the full version is $40.

Say KSP, what exactly did you have in mind it could do for me?

In my opinion that was, umm, not good? Perhaps slow it down a bit?

It can automatically generate a score from your midi file so that you can post scores with your compositions. It would help many people on this site better review your works.

This is a sticky wicket. There is a whole generation of composers active now who almost never write anything down. Much of the music they create is perfectly valid, and insisting that they produce a score when it's not part of their creative discipline seems somehow unfair. Yet I too prefer to examine some pieces in written form to see exactly what's going on if I want to comment in detail, and I don't want to have to drag a MIDI into Finale and hope it produces something discernable.

I don't know what the answer is. I suppose everyone has to review pieces and decide whether to take them seriously on their own terms and merit, regardless of whether they meet the reviewer's minimum criteria.

True, a valid point but I guess what I meant to say was, since I have been on this site (not very long) I have noticed that a lot of people seem to just be posting anything here, little scraps of midi files and nothing else, maybe one sentence describing it like 'ummm, here's something I did, umm, it's pretty crap, tell me what you think...'

I get annoyed because a great deal of care goes into my music and producing scores for everyone to look at and learn from if they need to yet my music is getting less response then all these midi files and scraps.

I have just seen a decline recently and wondered why, but maybe I am alone in this feeling?

Personally, I'm used to composing on a piano roll though I did hand write scores at one point. I neither use Finale or Sibleus for composition, so I don't usually have a score, and have to create one afterwards. There's still some editing that needs to go into a file once you import it using one of the conversion tools, like adding dynamics, tempo changes so forth. But it seems like I got the opposite response: More people respond to what I post when I post a score. Also I found it helpful understanding other's pieces when I have the score. So even if writing a score isn't within one style, they can benefit greatly from creating a score afterwards.

I'd be ready to post a score but I work roughly like KSP these days except I usually rough out something first, then get it into the sequencer, make adjustments to the rough score, then write up a decent score. That's fine if I'm definitely going to do something with it... but if I'm asking for specific comments here about some aspect, that means I'm likely to revise it so I have to weigh up whether the extra hours are justified.

That's before we get to the matter of scanning and turning it into a pdf. So for people's convenience here, I usually offer a notated short score. If someone is in a position to read it, they'll know what's going on. I'll bet that only a minority of members (that includes me) actually do read full scores presented, assuming there's time.
